Thank you for your reply Alexander. I will review that blog. Regarding your questions; I am assuming that python would provide the most bang for the training buck. I am interested in having one or two full time GIS Analysts that can double as programmers. I am not sure if that answers your question or not about type of programmer.

I am opening a new office soon that will focus primarily on rapid data conflation. I will be hiring about five new staff. I would like to have several trained in writing tools, macros, and other customization / automations to support the work. Given that most work will be done in a desktop environment, what is the communities opinion on the best training path and resources to meet this need? Any responses are appreciated.
