Branch Versioning Error

I'm testing out branch versioning in a new Azure based enterprise system. I have branch versioning set up with several branches and several accounts able to access them via groups on Portal. There were no red flags or issues during the setup, but now that I'm testing it I'm getting an intermittent error when I try to edit. The error occurs when attempting to append, but only sometimes. The frequency of the error increases when I use an editor account (i.e. not the account that created the Default, but one that has access to create branches and edit them), and/or a branch other than the Default.

Found a similar issue from a while back, does disabling the "Optimize performance for feature services" option improve consistency? Also to be clear, are these appends against the feature service layer or DB direct connection layer? Append is one of the few tools greenlit to work with direct connections but it can be flaky.
