Check out "Python Scripting for ArcGIS" by Esri Press for a more comprehensive starting point.
You are right, the Python 101 terminology is just a very brief introduction to terms that are used throughout the presentation. For someone totally new to Python and without any programming background it will of course take more than a 1 hour workshop to understand some of those concepts. The idea of that workshop is to give you enough to start writing some basic (but time-saving!) geoprocessing scripts.

Kind of rudimentary, doesn't flow very well. I would like it to be more in depth.
It doesn't really tell you how to get started, just some of the features of python.I left with more questions than answers.
As someone who just recently started learning python through codecademy I found this to be very useful. Though I was a bit confused, about why you went from if/else/elif statements to looping? Are these just the basic skills that are needed for using python in Arcgis?
