Portal vs Public

Question

I am in the process of setting up portal. I am trying to understand so many different things in the platform. My question is... if everything in portal is for internal use only, what is the best approach if you want one of you web maps to be accessible to the outside with a few modifications. Would I copy the config file to my DMZ as part of a webapp builder app. and make modifications and change the webmap's url? Or would I just publish a version of that webapp to ArcGIS online and make it public?

Hi Kathleen,

Would ArcGIS Online suite your needs?  AGOL is highly secure, and you wouldn't have to jump through hoops to get your data shared to the Public.  You can data for internal use only by sharing with specific Groups, and delegate data to the Public by sharing with 'Everyone'.
