Portal for ArcGIS Security 2026 Update 2 Patch 11.5 June 2026 RAM and 404 Issues

Working through an upgrade from 11.3 to 11.5. Finished with that, and lo and behold, they dropped a security patch before we go live. This Portal for ArcGIS Security 2026 Update 2 Patch is a big one, 1.7 GB for 11.5, I didn't check the other versions.

Install did not go well, it ballooned and filled my 32 GB of RAM to 99.8% and killed my RDP session. I was able to run a remote powershell to check the status, which reported that the install was complete, but the memory would not release, and I could not re-login via RDP. I sent a remote reboot command, and was able to get to the machine.

After Portal came back online, portaladmin loaded just fine, health and logs look great, but 404 when trying to navigate to the home app. Checked the C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Portal\framework\webapps\ for argis#home and it's just gone.
I was able to restore the arcgis#home from the snapshot I took just before applying the update, but I have no idea if this is supported, or if I just circumvented the security patch.

Oh, and after deploying the patch, almost 20GB of space was consumed.

Has anyone else seen this patch remove or fail to redeploy the arcgis#home webapp folder, and does restoring that folder from a pre-patch snapshot leave the Portal security patch in a supported/fully patched state? I’m especially interested in whether arcgis#home is modified by this patch, because restoring that folder from snapshot fixed the outage but may have restored pre-patch files.

We determined that, in our environment, the issue appeared to be related to the ArcGIS Server instance that was running on the same machine as Portal. During the failed patch attempt, the expected ArcSOC.exe processes were not starting normally. Instead, the machine accumulated many ArcGIS Server Java/Tomcat bootstrap processes, which slowly consumed the available RAM and destabilized the server. Our other machine that was in the same server site did not have any of these issues. We were unable to determine if the patch caused this issue. We do not currently believe this was caused by a defect in the Portal patch itself.

After correcting and validating the ArcGIS Server configuration, we were able to apply the Portal for ArcGIS Security 2026 Update 2 Patch on 11.5 without issue. We were then able to upgrade to 12.1 and apply the 12.1 version of the same patch successfully.

If we ran into this again on a machine where Portal and ArcGIS Server are installed together, we would stop ArcGIS Server on that machine before applying the Portal patch, validate Portal after the patch, and then restart/validate ArcGIS Server afterward.

I ran the Portal for ArcGIS Security 2026 Update 2 Patch on 11.5 last night and did not see anything out of the ordinary. RAM usage was normal during and after the update. We have been on 11.5 since last summer and have installed every portal patch as they came out. So, I installed Portal for ArcGIS Security 2026 Update 2 Patch on top of Portal for ArcGIS Security 2026 Update 1 Patch D for 11.5.

I manually execute the patch MSP files. Did you use PowerShell to execute the MSP file? That might have something to do with it. Two things that come to mind are the patch file needs to run with admin permissions and sometimes security/antivirus software can mess up portal patches/upgrades.

We use separate physical servers, so I do not know much about snapshots. Restoring the folders to a time before installing the patch should have removed the patch files. Does the Patch Notification show the patch installed?

It was after upgrading to 11.5. The machine had been running for 18+ hours without any issues before attempting the patch. However, we later found several other Portal web application folders/files missing and ended up reverting to the pre-patch 11.5 snapshot.

There was an instance of ArcGIS Server also running on the same machine. I don't know whether the Portal patch is what destabilized Server, but Server was the component that ended up consuming the RAM and causing the overall failure. During the failure, expected ArcSOC.exe processes were not present; instead, the machine accumulated dozens of ArcGIS Server Java/Tomcat bootstrap processes. It looked like Server was repeatedly trying to initialize or recover its service framework without cleaning up prior attempts.

I don't currently have the ability to spend another 10+ hours trying the update again if the patch is what caused the GIS Server side to self-destruct.

I'm glad to hear you didn't have any issues. Do you happen to have an ArcGIS Server instance running on the same machine as Portal? In my case, ArcGIS Server seemed to be what caused the RAM consumption, but I don't know whether the Portal patch triggered the Server problem.

I used the ArcGIS patch tool to identify and install the patch, not PowerShell. I only used remote PowerShell afterward to check the installation status because the server would no longer let me log in due to the high RAM usage.

Before we reverted to the pre-patch snapshot, and after restoring the (some) missing files, the Patch Notification tool indicated that the Portal patch was installed. We later identified a lot more missing which is why we reverted.

Once you upgraded to 11.5 was it only the Portal for ArcGIS Security 2026 Update 2 Patch that you applied?

Also as @Joshua-Young has asked you, did you apply the Patch via PowerShell?

Our ArcGIS Server instance is on a different server from ArcGIS for Portal. I have never checked the RAM usage on our ArcGIS Server when doing I portal patch. I will keep that in mind next time. What you are describing sounds a lot like what I went through trying to upgrade 11.5 to 12.1. The install completed but most of the directories were empty. Checking the installer logs it looked like the 7zip process to extract the patch files crashed with an error but the installer just kept trying to do things with missing files until it finished. The Portal for ArcGIS Security 2026 Update 1 Patch D for 11.5 is supposed to fix that 11.5 to 12.1 issue but I wonder if it needs to be installed before doing any other 11.5 portal patches?

I was fully patched for all ESRI Enterprise products, and all were on 11.5 that I was running before I tried to patch with this latest security update. I did not try to use PowerShell to apply, I was using the Patch Notification tool. Windows was fully up to date as well.

IF I were to try again, I think I would turn off the ArcGIS Server service on that machine while patching. And if Server exhibits the same behavior after turning it back on after the patch, I'll need to consider moving it off of that machine altogether.

We just patched on 11.3. It installed just fine, took about 30 minutes.

I've just applied the SP 2 patch and now I'm getting Calcite Nav errors when navigating the front end:
React Router caught the following error during render TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'length')
at r (runtime.js:1:1545)
at async Promise.all (index 0)
at async Promise.all (index 3) {componentStack: ' in Lazy\n in b\n'}

This occurs when clicking the Nav Menu Galley/Content/Home
Has anyone else suffering this?
