Arcgis Enterprise Data store not starting

Question

I tried to upgrade our Arcgis Enterprise to version 12 and all components (Server, Portal) updated properly except the Data store. When the installation finishes nothing starts and there are no log files produced. The windows service can not be stopped so I have to manually taskkill it.

I have reinstalled it multiple times and change the user that is running the service. I have unfederated my server and manually deleted the Datastore db entry from the Server.

I don't know what to do because there are no logs anywhere to guide me... Any ideas?

I am working on a windows server 2022 Virtual Machine. 32GB Ram, 4 cores Intel Xeon.

Thanks so much Lorenz, you saved us a lot of time and frustration.

We also experienced the same "service not starting" with both ArcGIS Data Store and Portal for ArcGIS. Right after upgrading from 11.5 to 12.1. In both cases we managed to get it up and running again by populating the classpath. In one case, the jar files themselves were not copied, so we performed a repair of the software to copy all files again.

For Portal the reg key is.

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Apache Software Foundation\Procrun 2.0\Portal for ArcGIS\Parameters\Java

Basically we looked at the directories already in the classpath key and added all .jar files from that path. In our case for Portal:

E:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Portal\framework\lib

E:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Portal\frameworkuntime\ds\framework\lib

E:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Portal\frameworkuntime	omcat\bin

E:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Portal\frameworkuntime	omcat\lib

For Data Store:

Program Files\ArcGIS\DataStore\framework\lib

Program Files\ArcGIS\DataStore\framework\lib\cachelib

We had a similar issue with the 12.1 ArcGIS Data Store. The Data Store did not start propery after an upgrade. The apache process was spawned, but no java processes. The root cause in our case were some missing classpaths in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Apache Software Foundation\Procrun 2.0\ArcGIS Data Store\Parameters\Java

In my opinion the setup for 12.1 is faulty and does not overwrite properly the registry keys.

After spending 4-5 days and reinstalling about 15 times, I did manage to get it started by doing the steps in a very specific order which honestly I cant remember exactly right now. It was something like:

Unfederate, uninstall datastore, manually delete the entry of the datastore from arcgis server folders and files, delete all datastore files, stop arcgis server/portal services, manually delete the datastore service if needed.

Then install datastore without the arcgis server/portal service running. Do the configuration and then start the rest of the services and federate...

However, I was still experiencing some issues afterwards (Especially with the WFS services) so I rolled back the whole VM to 11.5....
