Calculate points within a polygon based on different fields

I need to calculate the number of points within a polygon shapefile. The polygon has  several different fields which classify each of the shapes within the polygon file, and I want to calculate how many points are within each of those fields, not just within the entire polygon itself.

Makes sense to determine the number of points/vertices of each polygon.  Not sure if I understand when you say, "you want to calculate how many points are within each of those fields." Maybe showing some of your table may help your post.
