ArcGIS Enterprise Migration from 10.7.1 Linux to 10.9.1 Windows

Dear All,

I'd like to migrate all the content in the ArcGIS Enterprise 10.7.1 Linux to 10.9.1 Windows (both environment are multiple machine with high availability in Azure), please advise which method that appropriate for the task?

So far I have read some methods:

1. Join site, however it doesn't work for cross OS (from Linux to Windows)

2. Webgisdr Tool, if I'm not mistaken it works only for the same version of ArcGIS Enterprise.

Therefore, highly appreciate any advice for my case. Thanks.

I understood the plan and in Essence it’s logica and I understand the double hop is a lot of work. The issue is that the Linux environment will have alias names and the content reflects those alias names/. If the new environment has different alias names the old content won’t work.

you can firewall off the new environment if your infrastructure allows, which would allow you to get around that.

bit the content would still be 10.7.1. When you upgrade an ArcGIS enterprise you upgrade the software then the content. Importing 10.7.1 continent into 10.9.1 doesn’t upgrade the content.

that’s why we use the double hop.

in terms of third parties I think the forum rules aren’t geared for that. I’ll put a second response below with a.recommendation just in case admins don’t like that approach. I have no affiliation with this organisation so I’m not trying to sell. It’s just a tool I’ve seen work.

Sorry for my spelling in that last response. I just realised that my iPhone autocorrected a lot of text. I should respond to these from the laptop in future. I'm glad you were able to understand the reasoning for implementing 10.7.1 on Windows, copying content and then upgrading. It's a lot of work I agree, but the only way to do a bulk load. Have fun with the migration.

Thanks for your prompt response.

What I got from your explanation (correct me if I'm wrong) is to upgrade the current environment (10.7.1 Linux) to 10.9.1 Linux, then migrate to Windows 10.9.1 by using Webgisdr Tool. However, I think it needs extra effort for me by doing 2 steps, which in the first step is already not an easy one.

Let me clarify my plan, there will be 2 environments running parallel, the 1st one is the current ArcGIS Enterprise 10.7.1 Linux, and the 2nd is the new environment 10.9.1 Windows. It would be helpful if there is a way to 'clone' the content of ArcGIS Server, Portal, and Datastore from the 1st to the 2nd after reviewing the contents and tidy them up.

It's interesting also to explore options from third parties for this 'backup and restore' task, appreciate if you have any recommendation.

A couple of theoretical supported workflow would be:

1) Upgrade Linux to 10.9.1 then use the webgisdr tool to migrate content to Windows at 10.7.1

2) Implement 10.7.1 on Windows, use the webgisdr tool and then upgrade to 10.9.1

Please note that I choose not to work with Linux and so I haven't got direct experience with this. However, if a client were undertaking a windows-base upgrade from 10.7.1 to 10.9.1 (side-by-side), I would look to implement one of the two options above. In saying that, many clients that have gone side-by-side have taken the opportunity to review their content and tidy it up. This has led to best practices being implemented and less 'junk' being carried over.

The other thing with the webgisdr tool is that the paths will be the same in both, so environments will need the same sub-domains etc for the webgisdr workflow to work.

I haven't used it anger, and you would need to upgrade your Linux environment to 10.9.1 ( because this tool was introduced in 10.8.1).

The key thing here is testing and trialling different approaches. There are several 'backup and restore' options from third parties that you can find in the ArcGIS Marketplace as well. They may help with this as well.
