Conservation GIS Reference project Status

The goal of the Conservation GIS Reference Project is to assemble on the order of 1000 conservation GIS speaker profiles and presentations given from 1997 thru 2019, to complete by Summer 2020. Sources for the presentation content are hoped to include the annual ECP Conservation Track at the ESRI UC from 1997-2010, the Triennial CNPS conferences from 2012-2018, and the annual SCGIS conferences from 1997-2019.

Progress for this new effort is of necessity bootstrap, with prototyping alternating with presenter review & contribution. The following status list is intended to be updated regularly. If you are interested in getting a particular year or talk done please let me know.

UPDATE: Jan 18 2020 Classification system refinements done for now, look for a final update there by Jan 20. Reference project work on hiatus now, will resume Feb 10-15th. Country & Continent search tags now added to all of 2015-2019 entries. Main landing page updated to show the search terms used to create each of the auto-lists. New simplified navbar now added to all 2015-2018. Landing pages done for 2014-2019. Final Tags now assigned to all 2014-2019. Current total profiles drafted or completed: 300. Rough profiles & abstracts mostly complete for many ECP conference years, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007.2007 . Final profiles done and ready to publish for 2013, 2014. Email notifications sent out for the prototype non-scholar speaker profiles for 2014 & 2015. 4 contacted non-scholar speakers have responded with changes and additional material to add. All other responses were more simple, ie good work, thanks. Progress towards goal of 1000 profiles/abstracts complete by Summer 2020 appears to be on track, but the amount of material available in older years will be less. Full paper content for about 50% of papers has been located for ECP conferences from 1995-2012. Full paper content for SCGIS is sporadic before 2015 and will depend upon speakers still having it and being willing to share an old paper, but sharing more current papers is totally acceptable.

UPDATE: Jan 15 2020 Classification system refinements for readability and utility mostly done. Search tag revisions completed for all of 2019 and 2018. New simpler navigation bar to help navigate out of profiles completed and added to all 2018. Main Scholar landing page for 2019 and 2018 started. Main Annual Landing pages for 2019 and 2018 Started. Auto-lists updated to use the new classification tags completed for 2019 and 2018. Actual test cases to answer incoming email questions about who does what where on conservation GIS beginning to be completed, using the reference project, with functional & useful results. Current total profiles drafted or completed: 260

UPDATE: Jan 10 2020: 5 speaker requests to add additional info to their profiles received & pending. Another 20 profiles added to complete preliminary scholar profiles for 2013. First 2013 review notice completed. Final 2013 notice to be sent. Remaining 2013 speakers raw materials, film, pdf & photos collected and organized. Prototype Profiles to begin Jan 14 with first round notice hopefully Jan 18. 2014 Scholar Profiles about 30% done. First notice completed. Landing pages completed for reference project annual summaries for 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2015 2016. Master all-years summary index updated to reflect some reference project content.

No luck finding source material for 2004 or 2006 so far. Inventory of film and PDF content for 2012 and before has found some pdfs & films, very few though.

Begin to identify when scholars name other senior scholars as their teachers and mentors so that profile hyperlinks can be added. Refine classification system to get rid of awkward codes and just use easy-to-remember words, and add and test code scheme needed to list all scholars ever, all scholars in a given year, all events in a given year, all people & events in a country or chapter ever -or in any given year, all global events, speakers & reports in any given year. Will require revision of 200 profiles. Current profiles completed =220.

Main proceedings: video & pdf completed for all 70 speakers. Tried to get specific written permission to publish proceedings in 2015 and less than half of the speakers ever responded to any emails, so less than half of the talks ended up getting published.

Main Proceedings: Speaker profiles move to Geonet in order to add into reference project: Currently begun, 8 prototypes published and all 2015 speakers were emailed to explain project, review the prototypes and respond with permission or requests. So far 4 responses all positive. Remaining profiles will be completed and all added to reference project.

Main Proceedings: A new basic profile consisting of only the text material already publicly released in the conference program will be created for the remaining 2015 speakers who did not respond to any emails.
