Is it posible to create a service with no spatial data?

Question

I would like to create a Service that only has one table in it.  No Spatial data at all.

I would use this to publish to AGO, and then make that table available on Open Data.

I know I can have AGO host the table in this circumstance, put I would prefer to host it from my Server, as it would be 'Live' and I would not have to do uploads to update the data.

Have you read any of the following (going from oldest to most recent):

* How do you use stand alone tables? 
* Can we publishing only one data table on ArcGIS Server?

I still believe the short answer is "no," but there are a variety of workarounds proposed in those threads.
