Survey123 publishing error, code: 500

I'm getting an Error getting result parameter message when attempting to publish new surveys to Portal. I can modify surveys that have already been published, but not create new ones. A folder is created as normal, but the form is absent and the feature layer is corrupt. We just upgraded ArcServer and Portal 10.6. Any insights as to what may be causing the issue would be very helpful, thank you.

Just to update everyone (and to anyone else who might be experiencing this), we have a resolution to this issue. I contacted ESRI technical support and all I had to do was stop and start the PublishingToolsEx geoprocessing service through the ArcGIS Server Admin endpoint.

In my troubleshooting before contacting support or posting on geonet, I restarted the PublishingTools service through server manager, but didn't realize there was another service that is only found through the ArcGIS Server Admin endpoint and not through server manager.

Hi Justin,

Do your surveys have either questions of type 'start' or 'end'? There is a bug in 10.6 Portal with regards to time settings, which are set when those questions are present. If possible, can you try using the 2.7 beta from the Early Adopter Community- it should be addressed in the next version (or wait a few days, as release will occur shortly).

Hello James,

I just tried to submit a default template form that only contains one text question and got the same error, no time fields were present in the form. We just looked over our permission settings for my account and turned on every option that looked relevant for content creation.

I'll give the beta version a shot, thank you.

After looking in the ArcGIS Server logs, Justin and I get this error message: Instance of the service 'System/PublishingToolsEx.GPServer' crashed.

The only thing that has changed is we upgraded to 10.6 over the weekend. I can't publish a simple survey with only one question.

Thanks for the additional information. Can you attempt to publish a zipped shape file or fGDB into a service?

We were able to publish a hosted feature layer from a FGDB that was uploaded to Portal.

Thanks for identifying a workaround but the workaround may not be an ideal solution for our shop with an enterprise portal deployment across different companies.

JTedrick-esristaff , after installing 2.7.72 I published my form and I continue to get the same error. Our Portal is 10.6.1. Any suggestions beside restarting the geoprocessing service?

Hi Renato,

First, can I ask that you doubt-check the server version - 10.6.1 is currently under development; the latest release was 10.6 . Aside from the restart Ryan mentioned, we also think there may be a relationship to spectre/meltdown patches for Windows- if those have been applied, please look to apply the ArcGIS Server patch as well; see https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/product/uncategorized/meltdown-and-spectre-processor-vulnerabilities/ for more info.

I tried to publish a new survey yesterday and received the attached error. It appears to be very similar to this thread. I went to the ArcGIS Server Admin REST endpoint and stopped then started the PublishingToolsEx and the Publishing Tools geoprocessing service.

Hi James,

I am replicating this issue with beta version 3.5.124 and Portal 10.7.

No start or end questions, but I do have type time. Publishing services have been restarted using Server Admin.

Server Logs only report that the Manage Feature Service failed.

ERROR: Table not found. Failed to execute (Manage Feature Service).

I also see that the feature class and tables from the survey are not being created. Even though that step in the survey publishing appears to have worked. Service is created without any layers/tables.

My survey is large - around 400+ inputs in the survey.

*** UPDATE ***

I was about to post the above when I thought of testing this. I removed 300+ inputs from my survey (easy to do with my survey containing many groups - I simply cut/paste them to an excel file). I then successfully published the survey. Because my service was created, I then copied back in the 300+ inputs I originally removed, and republished the survey, selecting the option to add all of the new fields to my existing service. It's been about 1 hour and it's still on this action:

I cancelled that process, closed Survey123 Connect, reopened, removed 200+ of the 300+ inputs I tried to add, and started the process again. No improvement. So perhaps it is a limitation in survey size, however I doubt that is a Survey123 limitation vs. an ArcGIS Server limitation like heap size or something of the likes.

I'll continue testing to see if I can get more inputs added.

I would try stopping and restarting the feature service in server manager. This often fixes our fairly large forms when we're doing multiple updates.

This is a big survey in theme-grid pages style with 9 pages. It has an external_choices tab with more than 40,000 address records as well as a few other smaller .csv's used in several pulldata calculations.

Hi Marie-Lou,

Unfortunately, code 500 is a generic error code with the ArcGIS Server. If you could capture a log file during the publishing process, that would help try to identify what specifically is happening (See the Survey123 doc for details - you can turn on logging without connecting to a console, which will write to a file). That being said, from your description it sounds like there may be a large number of questions - is that the case?

Hello,

I need to come back to this post because one of our customers has massive problems with one of his surveys. Whatever we try, publishing of the survey finally fails with error code 500. Even after restarting the PublishingToolsEx geoprocessing service through the ArcGIS Server Admin endpoint, just after only a few seconds, we get an error code 500: Dataset not found.

Admittedly, the survey is large, it consists of 3841 net lines. Nevertheless, analysis of the problem does not render a clear picture. All field names are unique and we excluded all “secondary” questions (notes, hidden) from being published by setting the parameter “bind::esri:fieldType” to NULL.

To analyze the problem we built up the survey from scratch by adding sub-group by sub-group and trying to publish it. When publishing fails the first time with error code 500 the resulting feature layer consists of 1000+ fields and has 35 relationships (repeats).

After removing the repeat block from the lastly added group the survey could be published and 12 new fields were added to the feature layer. The same with the next block. With repeat, publishing failed, whereas without repeat, publishing was successful and added another 18 fields to the feature layer.

However, even by deleting all repeats from the groups still to be added publishing finally failed at some point.

So it seems neither the number of fields of the feature layer nor the number of its relationships is the (singular) problem. Moreover, the customer already published a survey with 58 relationships and 698 fields to the feature layer. Unfortunately, neither the message “error 500” nor the ArcGIS Server logs do help.

We tested in two different environments with different Survey123 Connect versions: 3.6.137 and 3.7.62. The behavior is the same.

Can you help with analyzing the problem and finding the root cause of the problem?

I need to add another detail. When I try to publish the entire survey at once (which finally fails) the failure occurs very fast, after a few seconds only, with the message “Dataset not found.”.

On the other hand, when I publish the survey bit by bit (or group by group) a dataset, feature layer, fields and relationships are created. Here, the cause of the failure must be a different one. Nevertheless, the error code is 500 in both cases.

I am also experiencing similar error when I try to create a workforce project in Portal. I am an Admin so it not an issue with my account type or role. So please if anyone can help me resolve this issue.
