Change default fields shown in data tab

I know it's possible to show and hide columns of a layer or a table in AGOL on the data tab, yet the settings do not save. When you reload the page, the same fields are shown before I changed the ones to be shown or hidden.
Is there anyway to change the default?

 

Edit: I tried changing the "visible" parameter of the layer definition with the REST API to false, but then the field is just invisible, either in the data tab or when checking the layer definition. So that doesn't help.

This frustrates me as well. I've created an idea here for a 'Select All' button for the columns, which would make turning them all on/off easier, but would not address the fact that they get turned off again as soon as you navigate away. Super irritating.
