How to get ArcGIS Online Basemaps into MMPK?

With the latest version of the Explorer for ArcGIS app, offline access is via an mobile map package (*.mmpk) which is great but I get an error (The layer type is not supported in runtime content) when I try to add an ArcGIS Online basemap to my MMPK.

How do I get ArcGIS Online basemaps into my MMPK much like the old offline cache method can with Collector for ArcGIS?

At this time it is not possible to put online content directly into a Mobile Map Package. ArcGIS Pro 2.0 only supports writing file based vector data (File Geodatabase, Shapefile and Vector Tile Packages) into a Mobile Map Package. For Pro 2.1 we are working on adding raster support (File and TPK) and leveraging ArcGIS Online Vector Tile basemaps.

I have entered an issue for this. The Map load uses the 'first layer in the map to initialize' and when the data source is not accessible it fails to load. To work around this problem put a disconnected layer (a file based layer) as the bottom layer in your map. On map load the app will initialize the bottom layer first and load the map.

To apply the workaround to your map In ArcGIS Pro.

Insert a new basemap

Then add the Basemap layers of your choice to this basemap. Search Online and add...

Then add another file based layer that will be packaged into the map. I would suggest using a Vector Tile Package. I created this one https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=07b04d145b86410eaf5c5c42a78d8e95 its Level of Detail 1 - just background.

Make sure it is the bottom layer in the map.

Then use this as the Basemap for your Map.

For those that are not using a basemap (its good practice to always have one when creating a Mobile Map Package) make sure your bottom operational layer is in the package, and not a referenced online layer.

Online services within a MMPK do not seem to be working correctly, at least not using Field Maps on ios or Android. Yes, online content can be added to the MMPK and this displays as one would expect. What doesn't seem to function properly is when you have no data connection (Airplane mode for instance). The MMPK won't even open, despite there being plenty of offline content within the MMPK. It is behaving as if it can't connect an online service, it isn't going to let you use your map at all. The MMPK is saved on the device. Maybe there is something I am missing to make this function properly?

The WeatherRadar2020 map works when I sign in to AGOL. Is signing in to an AGOL account a requirement for any map package that contained referenced online layers?

I try to open the .mmpk in ArcGIS Explorer for Windows 10. I had to ask ESRI tech support for where I could download the installer (they pointed my to a blog post). Anyway, I don't know which runtime the latest version of ArcGIS Explorer for Windows 10 uses.

Yes. Using ArcGIS Pro 2.6 the ‘create mobile map package tool’ has an option to reference online content. All “https:” datasources will be incuded in the mobile map package as is. Users of your app will need an internet connection to view them. All ‘non-https:’ (file based data) will be included in the package. This allows you to create mobile map package that has a mix of offline and online content.

Is there a way to add an online feature layer to an ArcGIS Pro Project, share it as a mobile map package, and then when you open the MMPK file using Runtime api, the feature layer points to online. Right now, it seems like if you create an MMPK from an ArcGIS Pro Project it takes the data in offline mode. We want the layer to reference the online feature service.

I also have this question. I have tried to make the basemap a vector tile package and that fails too. My experience is still very limited so it would be nice to have a step by step guide on how to do this. I can publish my geodatabase to a mobile map package easily but it's not very helpful without street maps or aerial maps.

Yes, with ArcGIS Pro 2.6 will be be able to include services in an MMPK. This will allow you to create mobile maps that have a mix of online and offline content. Mobile map users will need an internet connection to view the online content, but it will allow you to create maps for the field with the information necessary for one to do what they need to without an internet connection, and a much more informative map when they do have an internet connection.

The new version of Explorer for Android is needed for Mobile Map Packages created with ArcGIS Pro 2.5, that contain VTPKs. It's getting close to being out of beta.

Good morning. It is now 2020 and though I can create a mmpk with a vtpk in it, Explorer crashes anytime we try and open the maps. Is this an isolated issue or does Explorer not read vtpks in mmpks? Any update on when Explorer for Android will allow the downloading of basemaps at will? Thanks in advance.

No, Explorer does not have support for putting a basemap on device and using it with any applicable map.

Yes, you can include a TPK (Create Map Tile Package of your imagery) in a map like you would any other layer. I like to add it as an operational layer that user can choose to turn on or off in apps like Explorer. These blogs touch on the use of TPK in and MMPK.

Raster Files (ex. JPG) can be included in an MMPK as well, but support for reading them is not currently in the Esri Apps that read MMPKs (Navigator, Explorer).

Hi Mark,

I followed your awesome Use ArcGIS Pro to make an offline map - part 1 and part 2 to make an mmpk with a vector tile package but I need to have one with the imagery. Is there a way to combine the two in an mmpk or should I make a mmpk for each type. The issue is that I would like to have our target vector locations in with the imagery but am not sure if this can be done.

yes, the pre-planned and basemap download currently in Collector is planned for Explorer. You will see that in a release this summer. If you have a Vector Tile Package (VTPK) or Tile Package (TPK) you can also include those as a layer in a Mobile Map Package and use them now in Explorer or anywhere that mobile map packages can be used.

I tried to create .mmpk using ArcGIS Pro 2.1 Beta2 also, but i get error this message again: "The layer type is not supported in runtime content:" when i add an imagery layer (It was WMS online tile service).

So please let me know How we can add an imagery basemap whenever we use .mmpk file in our app?

Hi Mark,

We need the imagery with labels base map to provide context for our vector layers.

So the Explorer for ArcGIS app can only go offline with file-based vector data. This is a serious limitation for us so will have to use Collector for ArcGIS and traditional offline workflow for the time being.

We look forward to ArcGIS Pro 2.1.

I agree with Mark here, as we speak of the current version of ArcGIS Pro does not support a raster layer while creating an .mmpk file. This is the reason why I asked if a .tpk would suffice your need.
