ArcGIS Pro: 2.4.2: Why the aprx file doesn’t appear in the catalog,

I observed that the aprx file doesn’t appear in the catalog. This means that one can’t switch from aprx to another by drag and drop.

While those topics are related they seem to want to dig further into the layer contents of the aprx/mxd files (almost like drilling down through a gdb perhaps?) I think what Jamal, myself, and others want to see is more simple; at the very least we just want to see that aprx in the tree just like we see every other Arc/GIS related file. From there we can open the project (in a new project window no doubt) instead of navigating windows explorer.

I totally agree. Like in ArcMap where you see an MXD and you open it from the catalog, closing the current mxd. Do the same thing with aprx files and projects.

The status was just updated to Under Consideration in January, which you already acknowledged in late February. The status will be updated to In Product Plan when the team has it included in part of a release plan. Please review ArcGIS Idea Statuses document.

Totally - It's so strange that catalog cannot see aprx files. Really surprised me when I realized I wasn't going crazy.

I'd also add that it would be very nice if the user can choose to open the aprx as a new session that replaces the current session, or as a separate Arc Pro session that leaves the current session open (which would then give the user two active sessions or more depending on how many they opened)

I still can't believe that the ArcGIS Pro 'Catalog' template / view can't even show that its own APRX files exist in a folder!

Please remedy this, to have to hop out applications like Windows Explorer to do this is silly.

In standalone ArcCatalog, You are able to view .mxd or data files, and so on in a Preview tab. under the geography drop down.

Why was there not possible to view the pro project .aprx files within the Catalog View but you are able to view the ArcMap .mxd files ?

Is there a way around that am I missing here or will it come to the new versions in the future ?

@DEAF_PROBERT_68 An issue that complicates your scenario is that a Pro project can contain multiple maps and layouts. Only one of them would have to be chosen by the software somehow to be the one to show in a preview. I suppose it could just use "the first" one that was created. Or, better yet, the software could enable the user to designate which one would be used.

Wow, I can't believe this wasn't a feature from day 1 of the release which was 9 years ago this month! This feature absolutely should be added. I thought I was going crazy because I could not find Pro projects that I thought were in a specific directory, and then I open Windows File Explorer and they were right there all along but Pro wasn't showing them. 🙄

Also I also miss the ability ArcCatalog had to add other file types so they show up in the view, so I also recommend voting on this idea.

Esri please, please, please don't keep us waiting for this necessary feature!

Three years since this was changed to "Under Consideration" and still I don't see aprx files in Catalog. Like another user said, I thought I was going crazy - I was sure I created this project file in this folder, yet I don't see it in Catalog. Was there a deliberate decision to hide these files for some reason? Why does it take more than three years to decide to go ahead and implement this?

Going from ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro, I am very disappointed that the contents pane can't see .arpx project files. It seems to defy all logic not to have that feature in the newer program.

Add the capability to list .aprx files in the Catalog Pane. Allow them to be opened from there, as you can in ArcMap.

With Pro continually 'remembering' a folder you accessed millennia ago when you want to open/save a project it would be more efficient to have favourite folders from where it is quick to get to relevant project (.aprx) files.

My scenario is that I want to open old projects in a separate instance of Pro, while working on a current job, to get symbology, titles, label formulae, etc.
Using the 'Open' process means Pro keep remembering the 'wrong' place (excluding the random locations it seems to find at a whim, on a Friday) when I try to save or open things from the main instance I'm doing the job in.

A further option would be to allow an .aprx to be dragged from Windows Explorer into an instance of Pro and have it open - as with ArcMap & a .mxd

Sometimes it would be super helpfull to see ArcGIS Pro projects in catalog pane.

There is another well known open Source GIS Software where it is possible to see the own project files in its "catalog". Furthermore you can even expand these projects and see which layers are in the project. And even furtherfurthermore you can expand the layers and see the fields in the layers in the project.

And another cool thing. You even can open the project from the catalog pane. I am not sure, but I think it was possible with arcmap, too.

I would love to see APRX in ArcCatalog in Pro, I want to read the metadata associated with a project and I cannot see how to do this easily.

Overall, I would love it if Pro's ArcCatalog had the functionality of ArcCatalog desktop e.g. 10.7.1 - like the ability to add file types you wish to see.

I fully support requests to see APRX files in Catalog. I agree it was invaluable being able to see MXD files and question why this functionality was not automatically brought over to the Pro environment. Two further use cases have just come up:

Restoring spatial files from backup and ascertaining which version of four had my best work was a mission because I could see the data in Catalog, like file geodatabases of feature classes, but I had to refer to Windows Explorer to see the APRX files. It would have been a lot simpler if I could have seen and made sense of all my spatial files in one application.
I am having to run a second lot of tests on some new symbology offered by our graphic design department. The first testing was done in a hurry due to various constraints, and there are numerous APRX files. However, because they do not display in Catalog, I was unable to put metadata against them, and trying to now repeat my work, I cannot see let alone preview each quickly and easily to see what it is and whether it is relevant to the present problem.
