Update Feature Service with SD File

Question

Hi folks, I am wondering if it's possible to update (truncate/append) data for a feature service with an associated Service Definition file.  This would be for AGOL.  I have a good handle on how to do this with a Feature Service published from a zipped file geodatase.  However, I do receive errors when trying to do this with a FS and associated SD file.  Is this even possible or am I missing something.

I am uncertain about the SD file. Maybe these will give you some info about truncating and appending feature services.

I have not tried that, but I don't see truncate/append functionality within that example.  It's only about publishing a service.  I want to run regular update without overwriting.  Wondering if I could replace the SD file with a more current version contain the necessary edits.  After all, I believe the SD files is just a JSON file.
