How to edit/smoothen the contour lines resulted from DEM

I have been using ArcMap to construct a contour map using an ALOS PALSAR high resolution terrain corrected digital elevation model. The resulting contours initially look like this 

 

I knew that there's a method to smoothen  out the rugged/intersecting/un-interpretable contour lines which is applying Focal Statistics to the DEM. I was wondering which neighborhood method that is suitable to prepare the DEM for contouring
