Configure hosting server role on ArcGIS Enterprise Portal

Hi,

I'm trying to change the server role of my federated server on my Portal from federated to hosting, but for some reason doesn't allow me to do it from the setting, and I get the following message.

But it seems that I can do it from the ArcGIS Portal Administrator.

Should I try to do it from the ArcGIS Portal Administrator?

If I change the role from federate to a hosting server, will I lose the layers already published?

A Hosting Server is also a Federated Server (or one of the federated servers).

First, check if you are able to validate the Relational Data Store (ArcGIS Server Manager > Site > GIS Server > Data Stores).

If it doesn't validate successfully, you need to address the issue with the data store first.

If the data store gets validated successfully, you may proceed to designate a federated server as the hosting server.

First try using the Portal GUI (Organization->Settings->Servers).

Else use PortalAdmin page (Federation > Servers > Click on Server's link > Update) to designate a federated server as "Hosting Server". Designating a Federated Server as a Hosting Server, doesn't unfederate it.

Can you not just also make this server a Hosting server as well as a Federated server? That is the way my federated server to Portal is currently setup.

Are there specific reasons why you would not want this server to be a federated server as well as a Hosting server?

Do you have a relational ArcGIS Data Store configured with the GIS Server?

That is the issue, I'm not sure how to do it, if I change it from the ArcGIS Portal Administrator from federated to hosting, will then be a Hosting server as well as a Federated server?

Do you have a parallel test Portal environment to make these changes to to make sure everything works as expected before performing the same action on your production Portal?

On the Organization->Settings->Server page is your Hosting Server blank? For me this server is the same as the Federated Server and I am unable to change it through Portal home page.

Unfortunately, I don't have parallel test Portal.

I had this exact same problem a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, it is an error message that Esri does not provide any documentation about, so I had to figure it out for myself. For me, it was because ArcGIS Server did not have the SSL certificate imported. There is a pretty easy way to test this. Try going to the ArcGIS Server admin endpoint (https://domain.com/webadaptorname/admin ). If your web browser is giving you an SSL certificate issue message, then that is most likely the problem.

You'll need to import the SSL certificate into server and configure server to use it. After I did that, I was able to set my hosting server with no issues.

As @RyanUthoff suggested, the usual culprit for the disparity in behavior from Portal Home versus Portal Admin in terms of designating the hosting server is due to SSL certificate trust (or the lack thereof) on the Admin URL used to federate the site. This includes the circumstance where a wildcard certificate is to secure the Admin URL, in which case the root and intermediate certificates in the chain should be imported for each machine in the Portal site from Portal Admin.
