How to Improve Accuracy of Address Matching in ArcGIS Pro Geocoding?

Hi all,

I’m using ArcGIS Pro 3.1.2 for a project where I need to geocode a large list of addresses. I’ve been using the Esri World Geocoding Service for this task, but the results are not as accurate as I hoped, especially for rural addresses and some business locations.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  1. I’ve imported a list of addresses and attempted to geocode them using the World Geocoding Service.
  2. For some addresses, the matching is correct, but others return with low confidence or no match.
  3. I’ve also checked the address format, and it seems to be in the correct structure (street address, city, state, and postal code).

My questions are:

  1. How can I improve the accuracy of address matching when using the Esri World Geocoding Service in ArcGIS Pro?
  2. Are there any settings or adjustments I can make in ArcGIS Pro to better handle rural or less common addresses?
  3. Is it possible to use a custom geocoding service or dataset to enhance matching accuracy, and if so, how would I set that up?
  4. Would adding more detailed address points or reference data improve geocoding results?

I’m looking for any tips or best practices for improving geocoding accuracy, especially for hard-to-match addresses. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

@SaiKrosuri Are you able to provide examples of the addresses that return a low score or are unmatched? For the low score results what was the value in the Addr_type field? Feel free to send a private message.

Do you have data to build a custom locator to use in conjunction with the ArcGIS World Geocoding Service? If you did, you could create a composite locator that that included the ArcGIS World Geocoding Service and the custom locator created with the Create Locator tool.
