2019 Conference SESSION: PLANNING FOR CLIMATE CHANGE
2019 ABSTRACT: "Taking Land Use Change Out of Savannas and Grasslands through Policy Engagement, Land Use Planning and Best Management Practices – Sulu2 Project" Johanna Prüssmann
The Sulu2 project takes place in the Orinoco River Basin (Llanos) in Colombia, which is currently the focus area of expanded agro-industrial development in this country. The project area covers over twenty million hectares comprised by a mosaic of different types of grasslands, floodplains and forests, which hold significant biodiversity values and unique water and carbon dynamics with high variability patterns. In recent years, the Orinoco region has become increasingly threatened by a disorderly expansion of agroindustry, cattle ranching, and the oil industry, and is now seen as a ‘new agricultural frontier’ for development. Land use planning and management in the region rarely include ecological and social criteria to safeguard natural ecosystems, biodiversity, and carbon stocks. We aim to improve methods to reach a climate smart land use planning, that doesn´t only consider biodiversity and carbon content of areas, but also hydrological dynamics and potential GHG emission savings through indicators for the identification of water availability, hydrological dynamics, carbon dynamics, and land use changes. The project’s approach is focused on improving land use zoning, planning, and management that integrate all aspects of sustainable development into the productive use of savannas in Colombia.
