The Sulu2 project takes place in the Orinoco River Basin (Llanos) in Colombia, which is currently the focus area of expanded agro-industrial development in this country. The project area covers over twenty million hectares comprised by a mosaic of different types of grasslands, floodplains and forests, which hold significant biodiversity values and unique water and carbon dynamics with high variability patterns. In recent years, the Orinoco region has become increasingly threatened by a disorderly expansion of agroindustry, cattle ranching, and the oil industry, and is now seen as a ‘new agricultural frontier’ for development.
