ABSTRACT: " As GIS practitioners, we often think the battle is over when we’ve collected or analyzed our data. But an effective map has a point of view and makes a case. To do either, you need to know where you’re coming from, and who you are talking to. Help your audience, or the communities represented in your maps, better understand your work with user-centered design. The key tools here are less about technical analysis and more about how you engage with map users, early and often, to show the your work in progress and see if they are getting your message and understanding your map’s point of view. We’ll share tips and methods for doing this for a range of different kinds of maps. Even one or two user tests of your map will make it better. It can be scary to show work in progress to strangers, but doing it early, when you can still adjust your final product, is so much better than waiting until your map is done. You’ll leave this workshop with methods you can use immediately on your next project to help make sure the maps you make are not just accurate, but also effective in making their case. "
