Hi,

I need to model the Cathodic Protection system of a gas network with ArcGIS Utility Network. The gas network is already modeled with ArcGIS Utility Network. What should be a better practice? To create a new, separate utility network and add the cathodic protection domain network to it, or to add the cathodic protection domain network to the existing gas utility network?

Testing the first approach a new structure network has been created with the suffix "_1" to the feature class names. Is it possible to rename those feature classes without corrupting the integrity of schema?

Thanks.

We have the CP modeled in a separate tier group, so the two commodities can be modeled separately.  We use a network attributes and categories to ensure gas does not flow on a electric line.

We model the CP network as a subnetwork in the Gas Domain.  As we need the metal gas pipes be part of the CP network.  If you model it separately, you will have to duplicate these features to build out a CP subnetwork.

Hi Mike,

Thank you for the prompt answer. Since the CP network behaves like an electric network, having it as a subnetwork of the gas domain, network functionality on CP such as tracing won't be affected?

We have the same thing - separate Cathodic Tier Group.  We actually have two different tiers within that tier group so we can model the electrical connectivity from the rectifiers and also model like UPDM suggests with cathodic test points as the sources (even though they aren't really sources on the cathodic network in real life).
