When configuring a web map in Story Maps, grouped layers are treated as one single layer when setting the visibility. It would make a lot of sense if you could select all the individual layers within the group.

The suggested workaround by Esri to make individual maps with the desired layer visibility is a painful one.

This is in development right now and we plan to release it in a month or two.

Any updates on development on this in 2024? Looks like this good suggestion was moved back from being in the production plan to now only being considered.

@OwenGeo When this will be implemented? This is so basic and important. Such a pain and so time-consuming the way it is now.

What happened to the plan to "release it in a month or two", from october 2023?

@OwenGeo ???

@Thomas1 - Unfortunately, we are not currently working on this feature. As noted above, we did take a look at it, but we were not happy with how it was turning out and put the project on hold. It is not something we have prioritized at this time. We realize there are a number of people who have upvoted it, so this is still under consideration and we may revisit it in the future.

We highly recommend using web maps with a simple structure for storytelling. If you have a map with grouped layers that you want to use in a StoryMap—and you have the need to adjust visibility of those nested layers when telling your story—you can create a new version of that map for use in the StoryMap. When creating the new map add the same layers but do not group them.

@OwenGeo Thanks for your answer.

Usually we have layer with all the configuration saved (pops), for ex. from a Map Service with grouped layer.  Yes it is possible to add layers one by one, but it means doing all the same configuration work all over again.

OwenGeo

@Thomas1 -- Popups and other layer configuration can be saved to a layer item and reused across any number of web maps or web scenes as needed. You can do this using the Save as option in the map viewer. The new layer item references the data, so if the underlying information changes, that is still reflected when using the layer item.

If you and your colleagues have invested time in configuring layers with good customized pop-ups and layer styling, I would recommend considering this technique to save that information to layer items so it can be more easily reused outside a single web map.

For more information see Save and duplicate layers—ArcGIS Online Help | Documentation and Save a copy of a layer | Documentation.

I hope you find this information helpful!
