I have two sets of polygons. One contains geographic units g1, g2,.., and the other one shows soil types: A, B, or C. My target is to 'intersect' these polygons so that I get the area of each soil type for each geographic unit, like: g1 = A(a1 sq km) + B(b1 sq km) + C(c1 sq km), g2 = A(a2 sq km) + B(b2 sq km) + C(c2 sq km). I think I need to use the intersect function but not sure about its settings. Could you please help?

Thank you very much. I used the Tabulate Intersection tool and produced the results I was looking for.
