I have created map services in ArcGIS Server 10.2.2.  In a couple of these services I need to make symbology changes to the layers in the mxd.  I am unable to see these changes unless I delete and recreate the map service.  I am not adding or deleting layers, just making changes to the existing layers.  I understand if need to go through the process again, but in earlier versions I just had to restart the service or in many cases the edit showed up automatically.  Thank you in advance for your input.

Yes, you have to republish & overwrite it each time.

You should be able to publish with the option to overwrite it (through ArcMap).  It is no longer just tied to the original MXD that you used like older versions.  Used to be you'd have an MXD folder, now you can publish from any MXD anywhere.  I personally still have an MXD folder to keep myself straight but once you publish your service it doesn't look back to the source again.

Thank you Melissa, I saw that it puts a copy of the mxd into the map

service files once you publish, but it sounds like I need to republish each

time, correct?  I will try it and respond.
