We added a new oracle database. Then updated the TNSNames file on the SOM machines and started testing it with Map Services.

We were having problems with the following errors:

The Layer:'Counties' in Map:'Data Layers' is invalid. The base table definition string "NEWSCHEMA.COUNTIES" is invalid. Underlying DBMS error [ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified No extended error.].

It would work sometimes but other times, not.  We missed the step to update the TNSNames files on other SOC machines.  Hopefully this will help you if you run into a similar situation.

using the TNS_Admin system variable to have all the SOC servers use the same tnsnames.ora would solve this problem as would a sync methodology to keep the files the same between the servers.
