ArcSDE not running after 10.1 license renewal

My ArcGIS server 10.1 license expired and when I renewed it ArcSDE wont pick the new license to enable connection to the geodatabase. Help

License information is stored in enterprise and workgroup geodatabases. Therefore, when your license expires, you must also update the license in your geodatabases. At ArcGIS 10.1, when the geodatabase administrator connects to a geodatabase that contains an expired license, a dialog box is returned to allow the geodatabase administrator to specify a current ArcGIS for Server license.

I have tried updating the license through the sdesetup -o update_key command but still it doesent pick up the license file. Is there a special way you have to inidcate the location of the license file apart from the usual full path "c:\Program Files\ESRI\License10.1\sysgen". Please advise
