How can I produce this effect in ArcGIS

I really like the shading done with contours in the image in the link below:

I was wondering if there was a way to do something similar in ArcGIS?

Mark,

First transform you contours into a raster using this tool.

After that use this tool to create the effect you want.

Thanks Tim but how do I get the graduated shading? It seems to be running in different directions!?

Do you see the shadows and how the outlines of the contours are thicker at the front than at the back?

Is this even possible in ArcGIS? I'm thinking it's something that's been doing in Adobe Illustrator.

I think the best you can do is what I have posted. It seems, as you said, it has been made through a program like Illustrator.

Thanks Tim I'll have a go at what you suggested and see how it goes.

The other thing I was thinking is that each contour is a separate layer with different shadings applied which would explain why some run in different directions from the other.

The gradient fill effect can produce some good effects, have a look at this blog page.
