Has anyone had success in federating an older server site with a newer portal site?  The documentation I can find states this:

'However, you can federate some ArcGIS Server sites with a portal of a more recent version'

Common questions about version compatibility—ArcGIS Server | Documentation for ArcGIS Enterprise

For a newer 11.3 Portal site, would an older 10.8.1 or 10.9.1 Server site be compatible?

Thank you!

@SaraFortnam1 - There were considerable changes from 10.8.1 / 10.9.1 to 11.3, primarily related to security, among other very important feature enhancements and new functionality in 11.x. Hence, I would say 10.8.1 / 10.9.1 is too old and can cause unexpected issues with an 11.3 Portal. Therefore, the best, of course, is to always aim to have ArcGIS Server and Portal at the same release with the latest security updates installed.

Hey @SaraFortnam1

To my knowledge, this can only happen with a major release, 11.x to 11.x and 10.x to 10.x, but the wording on the documentation does not support a 100% guarantee this is the case. For safety, I would adhere to that major release stipulation. If it is a hosting server, it does need to be the same.

Thank you!  This was my initial thought as well but wanted to see what others thought.  This would be the first time having to federate additional servers and trying to learn as much as I can before anything is scheduled.  I appreciate the advice.
