I've been thinking a lot about how to effectively train users on the Portal and encourage them to use some of the self-service capabilities. What I would love to see is a "Demo Mode" that interactively guides users through the basics of finding content, creating and editing maps, etc. I could place this on the landing page to catch the attention of first-time users. Ideally, this would have some level of configurability, so that I can make the content more relevant to our specific needs. However, a one-size-fits-all approach would be sufficient.
