We do have 0.3m imagery coverage in the Continental US (some comes from DigitalGlobe and some comes from our Community Maps Program). The 0.3m Bing Aerial imagery that covered the entire CONUS (which I think is what you are looking for) is no longer available in the World Imagery basemap due to it's age. However, it is still available through the World Imagery (Clarity) basemap.
As an example of our Community Maps Imagery, we have recently published 20 counties in New York with 0.3m or better aerial imagery. Check out What’s New in World Imagery Basemap (February 2018) for some of the latest updates.
RWaterman-esristaff, can you help Zafer with this question?
You probably won't be using Landsat for disaster relief. Not only is the repeat cycle too slow, the spatial resolution is too coarse to identify damage.
Drones are an option, but they don't cover a very large area. If electricity is down, internet and recharging can be an issue. Sometimes they're good, but for more specific issues like "how many floors collapsed on the building at location X?"
Aerial is an option (and probably the best if you can get there). High resolution satellites can work too, but only if there are no clouds.
So, it depends on the context. And disaster response is one of those fields where they always have GIS people.
Yeah I absolutely agree with this. Learn a little, see where it can get you and repeat until someone wants you. If you're willing/able to relocate, you'll always have more options.
Yeah, modeling fire hazard is a tricky task. The conference at Columbia University mentioned in this blog--Improving Tools for Predicting Wildfires--shows that there's plenty of interest and ongoing development in the area, and if you search the proceedings for Esri's User Conference last year for fire modeling you'll find some interesting work, as well. There are also a lot of non-natural reasons wildfires seem to be getting worse or doing more damage, including urban development and land management practices, that make even predictable fires really destructive. There's a good primer here that addresses some of those issues.

With the Landsat 8 8 day cycle to complete world coverage and then the 24 processing delay what are the chances of getting imagery to use (as in our exercise on Nepal) quickly enough to inform people on the ground of the spread of damage and its effects? Would it be quicker to get the rescue agencies to get a drone in and cover the area digitally for processing locally by the rescue team specialists using GIS? Maybe GIS specialists need to be part of rescue teams.

Congrats on getting that land cover map done. There are a few paths you can take to get the answer that you want, but I think the easiest will be to use the Tabulate Intersection tool.

I guess this is a worldwide trend but here in NZ we are now talking about young people getting into many professions without having formal academic university training. Rather like the 1930s 1940s where you started as the postal clerk in an office and in 20 years you were the managing director. As a former geography teacher and then GIS Team Leader/Manager I had a strong interest in getting GIS into schools. It went well originally and I was able to employ two of my senior students from a high school for a couple of years before they went off to university.
But schools here seem driven by examinations now and getting GIS into the curriculum happens only in a few schools.
Sahar, these ESRI MOOC courses give enough introduction and detail to get a good understanding of GIS. Why not keep doing them and just turning up at a company or more likely a local government agency that uses the software and ask for a 'starting-out' job? With MOOC behind you you'd have plenty to demonstrate your interest and knowledge.
As a former employer I went for the person not necessarily the degree and grew them in the workplace.
If I was to make a blanket statement about the usefulness of imagery, it would be to try and map vegetation somehow. It's just so much simpler to get a solid result than mapping other phenomena. Is there anything in your area that you're interested in that is vegetation-related?
Agreed. A lot of organizations that have GIS problems don't realize that they have a GIS problem.

Honestly, I don't have any decent ideas! I feel like imagery can be used in so many different areas that I don't know where to start. Sorta like I know I now have a powerful a solution but don't yet know what problems I could be solving. I have a feeling more than a few people can relate. So I was just wondering if the team had any general examples of projects that have been done in the past that really helped out a community or provided some sort of solution using imagery analysis. I am a GIS tech working for the city I live in so I have pretty good access to most of the departments here...

I think you can make a compelling argument that the part of GIS that has gone mainstream in the past 5 years revolves around networking/routing. Think about ride-sharing, delivery services, etc. It's gone from a simple question: how to get from point A to point B? and it's multiplied by a billion to route everything to everywhere.
Now, we're in an environment where everything has a sensor and can communicate with all of the other sensors. People are going to figure out unique ways to leverage all of these sensors to collect even more data than their original intent and will then be able to use deep learning to find new patterns. My hunch is that these data streams will be useful for organizations that want to assess risk on a very granular scale. Imagine car insurance based on where you drive to and the other drivers that are on the road. That data will exist and the ability to make an assessment will be as well. And this data is fundamentally spatial in nature.

I have this land use change and cove that I'm currently working on, it involves classifying my multidate (1995, 2015)image into forest, no-forest, built up and water. I have successfully classified the image into the four classes in ArcMap however, I want to know how I can get the percentage of forest that have been converted to no-forest, built-up. I was able to get the percentage each class in the recent image(2015) but I don't know how to get the percentage of forest area to no-forest and no-forest to forest, forest to built-up. I hope my question is clear and not too far from our discussion. Thank you.
Hi, Michael; great question. I'd start talking to organizations in your community about the needs they have and the kinds of problems they're interested in solving. With the tools you've learned about in class, you can get creative and start thinking about what you can do to help. I've seen projects that helped cities identify the best places to put stormwater BMPs, or used aerial imagery to find abandoned buildings in Detroit to target for removal. It really depends what kind of needs your city and local nonprofits have. Do you have any ideas about the kinds of problems you're interested in looking at, or the organizations you want to work with?

My experiences were pretty varied in terms of where I started and where I am today. GIS was never the goal, it just became a useful tool along the way. I got a degree in international affairs for my undergrad degree which is a fairly common degree for someone who grew up in the Washington DC area. Then I joined the Peace Corps and worked in Peru for 2 years and later rode out the financial crisis teaching English in Colombia. I came back to the US only to find out that with a degree in my field, 3+ years of international experience and fluency in two languages that I could not get a job. That's when I started looking at technical skills that I could pick up that would differentiate me and a graduate degree in GIS made a lot of sense.
GIS develops so quickly that if you're really good at picking up new developments, you can have a career that is focused primarily on doing GIS work. You'll need to be able to code, build apps, and do some other IT type stuff to hold this down. Or you can be a person who understands GIS and finds that techy person to implement your ideas and goals.

I tend to think of GIS as a tool rather than a field/industry unto itself. Most of the people I've gotten to know who do GIS in some capacity have tied it into a bigger field of study. For instance, if you want to map vegetation, you have to have expertise in both remote sensing as well as plant biology to be effective.
There are a ton of free resources for stuff like this. Esri has a suite of offerings through the MOOCs program. A google search will also bring up other free options. These kinds of courses are a great start, especially in helping you understand what's possible with the technology. If you want to be a professional who specializes in GIS, then you'll need some kind of accreditation/certification/university degree.
I think that GIS opportunities are only going to increase in the future. Everything has a spatial component now. Now that everything is "smart" or connected, the ability to speak to different devices is going to become part of GIS as well. My guess is that the international growth will far outpace the US growth since there is so much room to leap frog in terms of technology.
What has happened with the fire damaged vineyards in the Napa Valley? 20 years ago we tried to develop a fire hazard model in Auckland but poor data and a lack of knowledge and little access to satellite imagery for analysis were among the reasons why it was not pursued at the time. My question is with all of the technology, the image resources, modelling capabilities, the vast pool of geospatial analytical skills etc do fire hazard prediction models do any good when the wildfires fires that seem to ravage California are just that - wildfires - that start up anywhere, anytime and damage unremittingly?
Do you have any suggestions for small to medium-sized projects where someone could use imagery like the kind we are using in the class to benefit their local community? I want to do some volunteer work but since I am new to imagery I would love some project ideas from some imagery experts!

I'm not sure about those first two questions. If you're looking for information on development projects, I would suggest starting off with sites for NGOs like the World Bank or World Health Organization. Since they're relatively well funded, they have the resources to publish large datasets online.
That being said, finding out about smaller NGOs and NPOs could also be helpful. I'm sure that there are a lot of groups out there that need or want someone to help out with GIS work, but they might not have either the resources or the knowledge about how to go about that.

Hi AMA Team, thanks for your time. My question is about runtime.
Let's suppose that we developed a mobile application using Runtime SDK. They downloaded the data into mobile and edit them as offline. So this environment means local server, right? editing local server needs Standard runtime license. We have over 1000 field operators. Which deployment packs we have to buy? Why did you put these licensing limits into runtime? In the past, we had a RUD code and deployed for all mobiles. But now i cannot convince our customers offering these packets. Is there any packs for unlimited user?
Hi, initially thanks for AMA. My questions are about legendary licensing issue and DataStore.
1- So typically licensing are divided by 2 types : core and named user. But ESRI forces people to choose core and named user at the same time. My first question : WHY? I asked this because including Oracle all database firms gives 2 types : core and named user. But esri wants everything..
2- I tested concurrent connection to REST services for basic license for 8 months ago. I published a map service ( feature access is open ) then make people to connect them on web, ArcGIS Desktop etc and edit on them. These 8 people were exceeding basic license. Also talked with technical support in Turkey and they told me " there is no limit for connecting as each user" . Pay attention, these users were not named user. They're just user..
Then federating comes up. With federating, i think we cannot connect as just a user and consumes the services. We have to be named user. But we cannot edit. I think you need to add another named user type. Like Level 3 which is for only editing. Otherwise ESRI limited our usage and this is ridiculous.
3- This question is about runtime licensing. Okay so there are 4 types for runtime: Lite, Basic, Standard and Advanced. We can't predict about using for each mobile. A guy from esri dubai told me " this packs are actually seat". So if i installed my runtime program into a computer, mobile etc. one seat will be used. Is it correct? If it's like this, what if i write a framework and use this runtime and people just consume my platform services, how are you going to count my seats?
4- My last question is about DataStore. DataStore includes elasticsearch with releasing 10.6 as i read. This program is a customized PostgreSQL NoSQL database program.. So what if we want to use this program replacing Cassandra and Solr. Is DataStore able to be used for this purpose? I don't think but i need to ask this.. Because i think datastore is a very good idea to be a database to be used in ESRI environment. But we are able to use this to only store analysis outputs ( Geoanalytics and Geoevent ) and publishing traditional maps , i think. What if we want to move our whole data's in Oracle to this DataStore. It would be wonderful i think. But i don't know can datastore manage and store this.

If I understand what you are asking correctly the imagery that was previously available you're speaking of has now been renamed and can be found as "World Imagery Clarity" here it has pretty decent resolution but is quite aged. Similar to what you are saying though I have noticed a major decline in resolution through ESRI's new provider of world imagery in the area I primarily use it (South Eastern Minnesota) and also in other metropolitan areas.
I don't think anyone would agree that the "new" imagery is more clear than the old.

Hello, and thank you for doing this AMA. I have recently been curious about something and didn't exactly know who to ask it. This seems to be the perfect opportunity. So I hope that you can shed some light to it. Thanks in advance! Here it goes:
Esri World Imagery Basemap (here) uses a combination of different resolution (0.3 to 15m) imagery files. The underlying Esri High Resolution Imagery (here) claims to have 0.3m resolution imagery in the continental United States. And I believe this used to be the case because I remember using it to verify 1m resolution imagery from another source. However, recently the image quality seems to have degraded substantially (please see image below). The white object at the top of the image is a light house and three rectangular objects in front of it are cars. Clearly the resolution is not 0.3m and zooming in does not refresh the map to a higher resolution. Would you have any comments on why the higher resolution images are not available any more? I am scared to ask, but are they planned to be a part of a paid, premium subscription? Hopefully not!
