Make Basemap layer in ArcMap work with SDE layers with no username/password saved

When I try to move a layer into the BaseMap layer group I get an arror if that layer's source is an SDE connection that doesn't save username, password, or version.  I have many of these types of layers in the MXD's we use.  Even though I entered the credentials for these layers when I open the MXD, when I try to drag all of them into the Basemap Group layer, I get asked for the username and password for EVERY one of them, and then they don't work.

This limitation prevents us from taking advantage of the Basemap layer in many of our most used MXD's.

And having every user just login with one global SDE login so we can save the credentials in the layers is not an option for us, nor is it a best practice for database administration....
