Ecological infrastructure refers to functioning ecosystems that deliver valuable services to people such as freshwater, climate regulation, soil formation and disaster risk reduction. It is essentially the nature based equivalent of built or hard infrastructure. A range of aquatic and terrestrial data sets produced through the process of doing the National Biodiversity Assessment 2011 as well as critical biodiversity areas identified through a systematic biodiversity planning process in some provinces and local municipalities have allowed us to create a national scale map showcasing our national biodiversity priority areas. SANBI will now embark on a pilot project of mapping ecological infrastructure,
