Fuzzy membership from buffered poygons

Hi to all and sundry.

I am trying to get my head around fuzzy membership to use it for a fuzzy overlay of  a number of buffered polygons that have been converted to rasters. The diagram below shows what I want to do.

Is this possible? Are there any Fuzzy Experts out there that can please help me.

So basically you want an inverse Euclidean distance from the original polygon edge such that at the edge the factor is 1 and by the time you reach the maximum distance (aka ... the buffer distance) the factor is zero.  In this scenario your original shape has a factor of 1, uniformly, then the factor decays to zero within the buffer zone.  So my take is that you could use this concept to determine cell membership ...
