how do i fix running tool in modelbuilder when it gets stuck and does not let me continue

I was creating a new site/location in modelbuilder and I wanted to RUN the model, after adding the 'output variable' to display. When I RUN it then got stuck, before I could SAVE and continue. I can't even close ArcGIS. How do I fix it?

ctrl alt delete bring up task manager and shut the process down
