Field Basd Hyperlinking

Question

I am having a problem hyperlinking documents to an attribute table.  Based on what i was able to tell it should be a fairly straight forward process where you select the hyperlink button and drill down to the file location to find the document to be hyperlinked but that does not work.  In stead i am having to type in the individual file location into the hyperlinked field in the attribute table......any suggestions as to what i may be doing wrong?

Using Hyperlinks—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop

Maybe you didn't want field based hyperlinks then.  I would chose the type to match your desired workflow
