Newbie: what do I need to buy?

I'm used to using Google Maps API for Flash, but want to try ArcGis for Flex. What do I need to buy for the ArcGis server? Do I need to buy ArcGis Server for my own server? Or do I buy a hosted service? Or is it free?

My main reason for trying it is I'm not impressed with the performance of Google Maps API for Air on desktop or mobile. I want to see if I can get better performance out of this API.

I assume I can embed the maps and generate my own markers, etc. from data in ArrayCollection like I currently do in Flex?

Main thing I need now is to learn how ArcGis server works.

I am new as well, but this is what I know...
You need ArcGIS Server to publish a map service (like google maps, bing maps,). If you have your own data such as cad files, gis files, aerial images or currently using ArcGIS Desktop for gis work, then you probably should/could need the ArcGIS server.
You do not need to publish your own map services for ArcGIS API for Flex you only need access to them.

I would recommend looking at http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapi/flex/index.html
and http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapi/flex/samples/index.html here they have multiple samples as well as three sample ArcGIS servers that are used in the samples.

Good luck! If I am wrong, someone please set me on the right path.

I just need the basics for now. To be able to build flex/air mobile apps for Tablets that plot my own data on satellite maps with custom markers and allow me to add my own flex charts, etc. on click of marker or selection of location from a flex list.

So, I'm still not clear if I buy ArcGis online or a server or cloud and how much each of them are?

First start using ArcGIS API for Flex as you was using Google's API. Once you will get use to it than you can explore more to buy server to publish your own data but for testing, you can use all services from ESRI for Free. Here is the URL for ArcGIS Server pricing.

Also, if you wana check it out, try it on Amazon cloud..In my personal opinion, you should buy a copy of EDN (Esri Developer Network, $1500/Year), here is what comes with EDN

Thank you. So the $1500/year includes the ArcGis server?

we called and the ersi sales person is saying we'd still need buy a 20K+ arcGis server? Why? If it is included in the EDN?

Because if you read the EDN licensing you will understand that you can not use the EDN version of ArcGIS Server for any purpose other than development.

I think EDN License allows for dev and testing only. For production, you may have buy the complete license.
