Using Google Maps with ArcMap 10

I am a college student using the evaluation version of ArcMap 10 for a project.

I would like to pull in Google Maps imagery into my ArcMap 10 maps. I understand that this can be done, but my question is: how? I'm a beginning ArcMap user and a lot of the Help items I've read through seem to be dead end: that is, I follow the directions on how to add tools, but the tool I am told to add isn't where the Help article says it should be... is it because I have an evaluation copy?

Can anyone direct me to a newbie-friendly, step-by-step instructions on how to do this? Or, can anyone point me toward a free source of detailed aerial maps that ArcMap can work with directly? I've found some USGS maps but they are all far too large scale to do me any good- I need to see individual buildings in some detail, well enough to get a decent measure of their footprint in square feet.

It's legit. Our department has used it for a couple of years. It has maps satellite and a really cool transparent hybrid later that we use the most. The satellite imagery is much more up to date . And that price is promotional we paid more when we got it .

$25? No offense but is this legit? The site looks a little bit... sparse. The only legit one I'd heard of was Arc2Earth (http://www.arc2earth.com/ ) but... now they are closed!

Google is shooting themselves in the foot I think. I've seen a lot of smaller sites, even big ones, running from Google to Bing or Here or even Esri because they are now charging and making it harder to use. Their 'free' API key with certain number of hits, I hadn't been able to get to work, after one hit it seems to shut down. Hm. 3rd party devs are what make or break a company. (Esri...publish unminified JS API and file GDB, with NDA would probably help..) 3rd party devs made the iPhone a success. 'mapplets' were amazing but Google killed those a while ago and now this. Oh well. I may make a Bing widget soon.

I have 10.3.1 and Google Earth is definitely not part of the imagery. I talked to an ESRI guy about that and he said he has been in discussions with Google for 2 years without much success. They are closer, but not there yet. I have not tried the add-in tool. It states you have to be in data view for it to work. That won’t work for me. I will continue to georeference exported Google Earth imagery (I do have a pro license). No idea what an API license is. Or what API is.

Hi Samantha Hussey,

ESRI's basemaps are not Google imagery in 10.3 in my area (Georgia). That would be great though!!! Google Imagery is so much more up to date in our area. Now that ESRI and Google are becoming friendlier (i.e. Google & Esri ) this would be nice to see... Perhaps it could be sometime in the future?

That's exactly what I do - it works but I wish Google Earth would have a WMS or REST service to accommodate 10.1 users. I hear that 10.3's ESRI base maps are Google now. Wish I could upgrade would save me loads of time.

If you want to use Google Earth Imagery in ArcMap, you need to make sure you have your vertical exaggeration set to as close to zero as possible. Google Earth Pro is now free, so you can save imagery at the highest resolution. Zoom in to your area of interest, save as image. Bring the image into ArcMap and georeference it. If you have a license for Bing Aerials, then you can use the auto registration tool (make sure you do not have World Imagery in your map document or it will crash) to georeference your aerial. If you are zoomed in for many areas, the Google Imagery will have better resolution than the same zoom level in Bing (or World Imagery). Since we often use aerial imagery to digitize data from, it is important for us to have the best resolution we can get. I often will download several Google Earth images and mosaic them together using the auto register tool so I get better resolution for a larger area.

Thank you for the instruction but all I end up with is a blank polygon in both ArcMap and Google Earth... I think maybe I'm not understanding what the original poster was asking. I'm trying to use the digital image and all the lines and placemarkers I'm drawing in Google earth in ArcMap. It takes way tooooo long to quickly move thru the basemaps from Esri for what I am doing.

I just have a basic google earth licence installed on my computer. I am able to create a polygon using the button on the top next to the pin. It is a create Polygon Tool. When the window pops up, click and hold your mouse button as you trace around the polygon(free style like). When done, click ok on the pop up window and it will save the polygon to "My Places" in the table of contents. Right click on the "My Places" layer, and "Save Place As...", and save the file to KMZ/KML. I hope this helps. I was trying to do some screen shots, but of course my computer is acting up.

Would you be willing to share how you create the polygon in Google Earth (Pro)? I have selected a bunch of research areas identified in Google Earth onto which I drew lines for transects for the purpose of making hard copies for field use, but if there's a way I could get these images into ArcMap I could transfer them to my gps unit. Thanks for any advice, suggestions, help...

If you are set on using google maps, just create the polygon shapes you need to in Google Earth, then export them as a KMZ. Once in this format, you can use a quick tool in ArcMap called KML to layer. This will convert the polygons to a usable form in ArcMap and you can manipulate it from there. Anyway, I hope this helps. On the opposite side of that, if you wanted to do the work in ArcMap, and then export to KMZ to check the accuracy in Google Earth.

It all depends on where you are needing imagery. I've seen areas where Google is better than Bing. Also depends on what you're using it for in ArcGIS. As for me, I am having to digitize in building outlines from the imagery, and I've found Google has provided the most current building structures on their imagery as opposed to Bing and ESRI imagery. Again, it all depends on where you are and what you're doing with it.

I agree, Bing is simply not good enough for a lot of uses. Google Earth is usually much more recent and has better resolution when zoomed in. We often use 1:2400 for our maps. We need more recent aerials than Bing provides.

" just use Bing " does not work for some people's requirements. Google and Bing leapfrog each other temporally and sometimes (most of the time) Google is more up to date. Time often matters more than resolution, with regards to imagery.

Now that Google Earth Pro has been made free.... I am wondering, any updates to this, ESRI? I imagine until now the licensing was part or most of the issue. Thanks all!

Your statement assumes I am using one of the software I reviewed, which is incorrect. It also shows you, President of Arc2Earth, are promoting your product, and there is nothing bad in that, but using scare tactics are not appreciated.

agreed, there are plenty of places where the free ESRI imagery is adequate for the job. However, almost all of our clients end up buying subscriptions to Arc2Earth when they've determined that the ESRI or BING data is not as up to date or as high resolution as the Google data. YMMV.

2) ArcBruTile/ArcGoogle/Custom apps - these tools are not licensing the data from Google so you (and your organization) run a very real risk of Google showing up at your door (I can think of one very large org going through this right now).

Why not just use the Imagery Basemap layer from ESRI? It should be the first item in the drop-down of the Add Data button in ArcMap. Most of that imagery is at least as good as Google Maps.

the trial of arcgoogle allows you to use about 7 minutes, ArcMap automatically closed, if you continue to use arcgoogle, you reopen arcmap and you can use it. It's not a bug

there are only two legal options for viewing Google data in ArcGIS. Every other app/plugin/service is in violation of Google's TOS. (and Google does track unlicensed access)

1) Google's just announced Imagery access program. You need a Google Maps Engine account and can subscribe to the imagery on a per/KM basis. You have access to the raw data, a WMS service and via the Google Maps API. It's currently available in the US only (aerial imagery, no satellite data). You can create derivative data from the imagery in your subscription. You can also use the services from online or mobile apps.

2) Arc2Earth - This option gives you the entire world (plus Obliques and Streetview) but is accessed via the Google Maps API (no raw data). It is served as local MapServer and WMS services directly to ArcMap (and soon ArcGIS Pro) but can only be accessed via the desktop software (no ArcGIS Server or ArcGIS Online) We have a Satellite HD layer that creates a higher resolution composite image from lower map zoom levels that is good for printing and exporting. You are bound by the API TOS so if you need to create a lot of data using the imagery, option one is for you. You can alter your own data using the imagery as a base

I just wanted to add another note of a different color to this thread. In my observations, working in fairly high resolution mapping (scales between 1:10-1:5,000), Google earth imagery does not align totally well with high resolution data projected in NM state plane. I have observed this in comparing very accurate GPS data and also in comparing local 6 inch per pixel ortho-rectified imagery.
Thanks to person who posted article comparing Google and Bing maps, I look forward to reading that.

I tried that tool. I am using ArcMap 10.1. The tool works for about 8 minutes, then ArcMap freezes and closes. I start a new ArcMap session and the same thing happens. Too bad, this tool is helpful if it works.

Another factor to consider is licensing. From Google Earth:

"If your business is looking to use Google Earth for any external purpose, you will need to license Google Earth Pro. Examples of external use include using imagery from Google Earth in reports and presentations or otherwise creating materials that will be displayed or distributed outside of your organization."

Often, however, the Google imagery for the US is from the NAIP program, which provides free county wide mosaics through the USDA Data Gateway, and often many state GIS sites will have that imagery (and others) available in different tiling formats for downloading, or in their own WMS services. GIS servers, such as the one at apfo.usda.gov also serve up NAIP imagery. ArcGIS online also has numerous imagery sources including NAIP.

Has a solution been found to this? Bing maps are nice but quite frankly just having the most up-to-date map is whats important (at least for my projects). Google maps currently has the most up to date satellite picture by several months (or in the birds eye view on Bing by over 7 years) over Bing.

I think it would be worthwhile finding out what the pros and cons are when comparing Bing maps and Google maps...in my opinion Bing maps work just fine (although both have small errors of accuracy and Bing Maps are of low resolution in areas outside of highly populated regions like Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia) however, Google as a brand has captivated the market for world coverage of aerial imagery and alot of qustions on this forum as ask how can I use it Google Maps in ArcMap?

Equally, if your not working within the USA...similar differences can be found with Google.

Imagery with Bing for Iraq and Iran is not so good (only getting imagery to 1:60000) but surprisingly Google Maps is excellent where even in the rural Zagros mountains I can see individual outcrops and camp sites.

It all depend on what you want and where and researching where the best free data is and utilising it (just make sure you reference where the data has come from!)

Most people are familiar with google maps and thats why they want to use it. In the United States Bing imagery is superior, since they use digital globe 30cm imagery for the entire country while Google uses 1m imagery more often (especially rural areas).

dluns - the easiest way is just to use the basemaps provided by esri, which are already built into arc10.

If you need aerial imagery in the USA, I suggest using the USDA NAIP images. They're available from the NRCS geospatial data gateway. http://datagateway.nrcs.usda.gov/

It's pretty decent stuff.
