License required during install of SDE application server

Hi,
Is there any License File or Authorisation File required during installation of the SDE application server? License is not required for installing ArcSDE application server.

You must install a database and create a geodatabase in it before you set up an ArcSDE service. Use the Create Enterprise Geodatabase geoprocessing tool, the Enable Enterprise Geodatabase geoprocessing tool, or a Python script to create a geodatabase before installing the application server and setting up a service. An enterprise geodatabase must exist before you can start an ArcSDE service.

to compliment what nidhin has stated, you need to authorize your Geodatabase.

To do so you can refer the following link for updating the license key starting at ArcGIS 10.1:

Thanks for your responses. The geodatabase already exists we are just going through a process of upgrading it and the SDE application server. There are tools that make the upgrade of the geodatabase straight forward but to upgrade SDE you need to uninstall the old and install the new. Just wasn't sure if I would need to oraganise a license for the new instance of SDE. Thanks!

You DO need a working license for an enterprise (ArcSDE) geodatabase. Connections
will not work if the license is invalid, but this isn't just application server connections,
it's ALL connections.

A working license ISN'T required to install an application server, but it IS required to
start the service.

ArcGIS 10.1 and 10.2 share the same license files, but if your old geodatabase was
pre-10.1, then you'd need to authorize a new license in the geodatabase.

Hi Vince,
We will be using the 'Upgrade Geodatabase' tool to upgrade our enterprise geodatabase from 9.3.1 to 10.2.1 (maybe 10.2.2 now). I have looked through the Upgrade tool help and there does not seem to be any opportunity to authorise a new license for the geodatabase. So when and where should this happen?

you need to authorize your license after upgrading your geodatabase through the geoprocessing tool.

If there is already a valid license stored in the geodatabase prior to upgrading (Upgrade Geodatabase tool), you will not need to re-authorize your geodatabase. If the license has expired, you will be prompted to navigate to a valid license file (in your case, a 10.1 or 10.2.x file).

To further add on to what William said,

If you want to re-authorize, you have to install ArcSDE Command line tools and use the 'sdesetup -o update_key' command to update with the new license.

You can also use SQL to update the AUTH_KEY row in the SERVER_CONFIG table. -V
