As a geologist, I use ArcGIS Field Maps to collect structural geology measurements during fieldwork.
Many geological symbols (such as foliations or stratification with strike and dip, joints, faults, and lineations) need to be displayed with a specific orientation in order to correctly represent field observations.
Currently, Field Maps does not allow point symbols to be rotated during data collection. As a result, the common workflow is to collect the points in the field and later open the project in ArcGIS Pro to apply rotated symbology based on attribute values.
I would like Field Maps to allow interactive rotation of point symbols, while collecting data, with a finger or stylus. Alternatively, allowing symbol rotation based on an attribute value directly within Field Maps would also solve this limitation.
This would:
- Allow users to validate symbol orientation immediately in the field;
- Reduce the need for post-processing in ArcGIS Pro;
- Improve efficiency during geological field mapping.
Although this request is driven by geological workflows, it would also benefit engineering, utilities, environmental monitoring, infrastructure inspection, and any workflow where point orientation conveys information.
