Model Builder - Why won't output display in map?

I have a model that will run. It has a couple of raster tools and merges together some point layers as well. I can add any output to the map except the one that I want. Add to display and parameter doesn't seem to do much. It will show as a parameter when I run it from the catalog pane, but it won't display in the map unless I drag it over from the database. I have symbology saved for it in the properties table. 

Why do so many things not work? Or, how can I get a layer to display when the simple tools don't work the way you'd expect them to?

Add to display and parameter are set for the add to the map layer.

I added a simple tool to rename the last layer at the end of the model and clicked to have them both display. That seemed to trick the forces that were working against me and it added to the map. I removed the last tool call and my layer still displayed.

Ridiculous.
