New Map Viewer: duplicate legend items

In AGOL New Map Viewer, the legend is duplicating some items that were grouped together in ArcPro when published.  This same service in Enterprise Portal / Classic Map Viewer displays correctly in the legend.  Is this perhaps a bug with the New Map Viewer? Or do I need to do something (write some arcade script) to get the behavior I want? 

Some info: 

• Our portal is version 10.9.  
• Streams in AGOL is via distributed collaboration
• Yes, I really want these items grouped

Workaround for this issue: 

1. open "Style" panel after selecting the layer in question
2. under  "Choose Attributes", delete the existing/selected one
3. add the same attribute back in by clicking on the plus button
4. under "Pick a style", choose "Types (unique symbols)"
5. Scroll down to the bottom - click on "Move up" after clicking the three dots on the right side of "Other"

 or alternatively you can try using simple symbol when publishing from arcgis pro, and then symbolize and group things from arcgis online.

 

this is most likely an existing bug (BUG-000151332) - you can search for and track this bug number from your my-esri portal.
