@AyanPalit @JamalNUMAN @BraydenSAuten @HillaryBjorstrom Some afterthoughts... We don't have any issues with tracing our Electric system in the Utility Network. We can set starting points and use the OOTB tracing along with custom Trace Configurations that work great. This has to do with (1) visual connectivity while editing and trouble shooting, (2) visual flow direction for quickly seeing how/where things are being fed.ArcMap:

Again, I can't reiterate enough that this is a vital tool our editors used daily in the GN. When someone from the electric department or management would come over and ask us to show them how the system is being fed, we would be able to show them because of the Flow Direction Arrows. When the system wasn't flowing properly in our 3rd party modeling & OMS software, we could visually see where the problem was and fix it in a timely manor.Please help us all by getting this idea moved from "Under Consideration" to "In Product Plan".Thanks again!
@AyanPalit Thinking out loud is good. It offers more topics and ideas to inspect and research. The FLOWDIRECTION idea sounds cool. However, according to documentation on Configure A Trace it specifically states, "Do not use this option if you are currently modeling flow using subnetwork controllers." Our ElectricUN is based on Subnetwork Controllers so it doesn't look that the FLOWDIRECTION would be an option either.
Please keep thinking out loud though and hopefully a solution can be found for adding Flow Direction Arrows into the Utility Network.
i like the attribute propogation idea. i will see if i can figure that out. any documention on setting up propogation would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like this meets the requirements partially - gravity-based networks. The use case for dynamic network with switching changes (electric) or pressurized hydraulic flow (gas) is important as well.
Now that Utility Network does have a network attribute called ‘FLOWDIRECTION’, that can be leveraged to support the dynamic use case. Perhaps, a script/attribute rule can be added to update the ‘FLOWDIRECTION’ and this will allow for the symbology to automatically refresh. Thinking out loud here so, additional gaps should be documented.
@AyanPalit @HillaryBjorstrom @BraydenSAuten @JamalNUMAN Ayan - What you posted seems like it would work well for our gravity wastewater system, which happens to be drawn in the direction of flow. However, this will not work with our electric system due to switching changes that can redirect flow based on the Enabled field being True/False. I know that we can run a trace on the network to show connectivity but all the steps we have to jump through just to do that, especially when doing multiple edits, gets exhausting after a while. In ArcMap, if something wasn't connected properly, the flow direction arrow would automatically change to a solid dot. To verify you had it connected, all you had to do was click the Set Flow Direction button and it either changed to an arrow or stayed a dot, letting you know something was wrong with connectivity. Not having that simple function/tool has cost my editors a lot of time and effort.
@HillaryBjorstrom @BraydenSAuten @JamesRains @JamalNUMAN Thanks for the link however managing the digital direction manually seems unmanageable. are there any tools or workflows to catch these issues? like queries to select lines that need to be flipped based upon a downstream trace result? Currently i'm trying to use the enabled field as a trace stop and would like that to be the end of my feeder. my current configuration was created using the new migration to utility network tool.

I agree its a necessary function. i wouldn't be opposed to esri providing a geoprocessing tool that flips lines in direction or trace result on downstream trace. Just a thought. @AyanPalit
@JamesRains Thank you for being a squeaky wheel on this as it is also an important workflow for our electric utility. We feel like it is a needed element within the utility network. @AyanPalit
Hate to be the squeaky wheel here, but has this problem moved any further towards implementation? I know it's been "under consideration" since 3-22-2021 yet nothing has made it to any of the previous releases. This is a critical workflow for our electric utility, which worked great in ArcMap, and would make my editors work so much easier. An update on this would be nice.

@AyanPalit I have seen that flow direction is available on a Trace Network. However, we have a Utility Network and flow direction is not available.
To my knowledge, you can not have both networks on the same database. The functionality and detail of the UN is why we chose to go that route. Having flow direction is still very necessary, especially in our Electric System, and needs to be a part of the UN.

We are currently making the move to the Utility Network with our Electric, Water, & Wastewater systems. Flow Direction Arrows are a huge part of how we do business currently in ArcMap with the Geometric Network. This definitely needs to be an available option in the UN moving forward.
@DavidCrawford @MelissaJarman @KoryKramer has there been any movement towards adding this functionality to the UN in Pro?
This is a very valuable function that our guys in the field use daily, going from the geometric network to utility network almost seems like going backwards in this instance. Is there any update on the status of adding flow direction?

In ArcMap, we could change the source\sink and thus the arrows are automatically switched to the new direction

I have a suggestion for you, if it does it works.The electric line, copy and paste it and rename as the flow direction.
And change the single syblogy line as ArrowLine2.
than remove solid stroke.
You are able to see the direction of the line (if you are using the UN, your drawing direction must correct in terms of the flow direction ). When you need to see the direction, turn on/of the layer.
It would great if this tool is added to Pro in the near future
Please do this and make this available via the utility network and be able to be seen on web applications. My utilities wants this for sewer and I have just had to make a secondary copy of my lines and symbology this out. It is kind of annoying that this is just not a simple turn on and off option.
Is Schneider ArcFM is more powerful in terms of functionalities at the level of desktop and web than what we have in Pro?
@JamalNUMANMaybe not what your looking for, but Schneider Electric's Editor 11 series provides flow arrows over the Utility Network.
I appreciate the idea, and it is on our plans as a future enhancement.
I was just trying to set appropriate expectations with my response. I'm not sure when exactly it will become part of the Utility Network in Pro.
It is not as simple as just displaying it - its not as if we have this information stored, and are just keeping it to ourselves. It requires building the system to actually calculate and store this flow direction information (the UN derives this information on the fly during trace and analytic operations where directionality is required).
Again, on our future plans, but not specifically timed out, at this point.

This functionality would provide much more sense as it displays the flow direction. It has been there in ArcMap for years and years and I was happy with it!

I apologize, but this is not planned as part of 2.8. And I'm not sure when exactly we will incorporate displaying flow direction in the Utility Network. It's not as basic a property as you might assume.
The Geometric Network maintained flow direction as an attribute (internally) for every edge in the network. The Utility Network derives flow direction on the fly, based on the locations of sources and sinks.
We have plans in the future to embed this information back into the network index, at which point, we could enable the display of flow direction. However, there are no immediate plans to support this. Keep in mind - returning flow direction arrows for all the data in your network, from a service, is not the smallest operation in the world. And we wouldn't want to implement such a feature which immediately causes significant performance issues. [GN was all direct-connect - so that was a bit easier to handle]
