The process as described in this blog: How To: Add Secure ArcGIS Server Services as Items in ArcGIS Online does not seem to be available anymore. Furthermore, our existing items that reference secure services no longer work. Is there a problem here, or has something changed in the last day or so?
I am having issues as well. When I add and item whcih was a published features services in a map, and clicked to save credentials. The features nro the map work function.
I am having the same issue. I have not used this service before but need to in order to share a map and published services. When I turn on and setup saving credentials the features are no longer available or some are but briefly,
We've had the same trouble. Thought it was firewall but have proved it's not. I think it's been a problem since February 2025 here. Both US and EU hosted AGOL instances seem to have an issue. Unsecured services are fine.I also suspect that the secured service caches a token somehow (so maybe gets a longer life token when it requests one, more than 1 hour that is) which is why people are experiencing issues with this at different times, but that's just a guess, I've no evidence just a gut feeling.
Should probably add that we're using a federated Enterprise instance, which does effect how secure services present when you go to add them in AGOL.
This is probably not related, but I've been having a similar issue for a about a year. We did an ArcGIS Enterprise migration from on-premise to Azure. Ever since then, I've been getting a message "invalid user name or password" when trying to embed credentials into Items added to ArcGIS Online that are hosted in our enterprise portal. What I discovered is now I have to be logged into VPN to be able to embed credentials into secured items. Otherwise ArcGIS Online can't reach our portal's authentication service.
I think the reason for this is because when I did the migration, I was logged into VPN and it has somehow inserted itself into the fibers of ArcGIS Enterprise. I'm now looking at doing an uninstall/reinstall of ArcGIS Enterprise to try and fix this issue.
If certificates ends up not being the issue, then it might not hurt to take a look at VPN if you use it.

Yes - the data loads fine directly into an AGOL web map. I also double checked the security settings - there's no web tier security involved - it's all at the ArcGIS Server level.
That's odd. Are you able to access the service in an AGOL web map? Like after it asks you to enter your credentials when adding it to a map, does it load any data?
Thanks for the heads up - I'll have a look into that. The ArcGIS Server did get an update last week - but worked fine following the update. It's always possible something has changed in our environment....
Even stranger is that I'm not able to make a minor change to our existing items (such as change the waiting time) and save:
Something most likely changed on the server that is hosting those secured services. You might need to work with your GIS Server Admin and/or IT department and verify if anything has changed with the ArcGIS Server.
Here is a support article that lists some of the reasons why that store credentials option is missing. https://support.esri.com/en-us/knowledge-base/the-option-to-store-credentials-is-not-available-when-a-000012369
Interesting - thanks for your reply. My issue is that when adding a new item that points to a secure service there's no option to enter and store credentials.
However AGOL knows it's a secure service needing credentials as when I hit the next button I get prompted for them:
But credentials do not get stored.
As I mentioned, existing items (of which we have many) that do store credentials (and have worked fine for several years) no longer work for me either - as of today as far I'm aware....
What exactly about that process isn't working for you? I was able to follow that process in the blog you listed and it worked fine for me.
If your secured services are no longer working in AGOL, then that would indicate an underlying problem with the ArcGIS Server the secured services are coming from. Or possibly the credentials that were used to secure the service with were changed and need to be updated in the service.
