When you press F2 in Catalog to rename recognised file types do not select the file extension

Currently, when you select a file in Catalog and press F2 to rename it, the full file name text is selected, along with the extension.

Please change the behaviour to match modern file management tools and only select the file name and not the extension.

Based on the file type, Pro may or may not allow you to change the extension. (e.g. shp, jpg, etc not allow; pdf allow).
Having to change the selection EVERY TIME you want to rename something and you're not sure if the file type includes fixed or changeable extensions, is inefficient

I am not currently aware of any benefit to rename a shp file to .tab 👽 and having to change the selection EVERY TIME you want to rename something is inefficient.

An example of this: From the Catalog pane, When creating a new File Geodatabase (or renaming an existing), the user experience could be improved if only the filename was selected by default following this action (as opposed to the whole thing including file extension is selected which the user then has to make another selection of just the filename to continue on without breaking things).

That used to annoy me, until I discovered that if you just type the new filename over the selected text and don't include the .gdb extension, then Pro adds the extension for you.

This would make Pro more consistent with how Windows works.

I didn't know Pro adds the right extension, though -- that's something Windows doesn't try to predict.

Hello @RTPL_AU , I don't find that you can Rename a .shp to .tab this way, even if you wanted to. This is how it works for me.

1. Highlight your xyz.shp file in the Catalog pane.

2. Press F2 or Rename. Indeed the whole name, including extension, is selected.

3. Type yyy or yyy.tab, press Return.

4. Your file is now named yyy.shp

You don't need to change the selection every time you want to rename something.
