i want to use my vector colours in a raster!!!

I have a vector layer which I converted to a raster. I want to see the raster with the same colours. Why is this hard?

do you have the symbology for the vector file saved out to a layer file? (ie *.lyr) If so, can you not apply the symbology to it? (don't have one to try now)
