Hi,

Is there a way to show a DataGrid of the selected features using SpatialQueryAction.

I want to extend this sample to show also the dataGrid of the selection's result.

I managed.
I defined another event in spatialQueryAction.cs.

This event is called from mainPage and is fired upon completion of the query.
Here is the code:

Hi Joe,

Long time no hear....

I use your SpatialQueryAction.cs class in my project since it is more clear designwise (as you wrote).
I also decided to use the FloatingWindow from codeProject: http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/121488/FloatingWindow-Multi-windows-Interface-for-Silverl

The problem is, that the floating window uses FloatingWindowHost that is defined in MainPage.xaml.

How can I open the floating window at the end of the selection in SpatialQueryAction.cs if the host is in mainPage.xaml ?

Here is the code in MainPage.xaml:

Miri,

I pretty much always use the custom window as fixed size so I have not ever noticed that behavior. I was looking at the code I wrote to see if I could figure out what is going on. What I find especially strange is that it would return to the original Width since nothing it done with Width. What I think needs to be done (have not had time to try) in the SetupMinimizeButton method the DoubleAnimation for both minimize and maximize is setup based on the Height, which would be the initial height. What I am thinking is that instead of setting up the Maximize animation at startup it should be done when Minimize is called and the you could set the To = ActualHeight at the time Minimize is clicked
I should not close it permanently I will take a closer look. I use another class to manage the dialogs in the application, but from what I see it just changes IsOpen = true and the dialog reappears

I would just like to ask you for your experience with your customDraggable Window:

1. When you resized the window and then minimized the window in you application - after that, when you maximized the window, did it return to the default value of the window or the last size before the minimize?

2. Did the "close button" close the window permanently?

Thanks. I took most of your draggableWindow code and changed it a little bit. It is really compact.

I have two questions:
1. When I do minimize and then maximize, it always returns to the original size (Width="280" Height="180" in this case) even if I resize the window.

P.S. Do you know a way to retreive the Layer type (Point, Polyline, Polygon) of an individual layer in a dynamicMapService layer? I thought it will be part of the layerInfo or there will be some method to get it out of the dynamic layer or featureLayer but there isn't. Pretty basic....

The RelatedEdt zip is an example of an app that has a DataGrid and DataForm working together and hosted in a DraggableWindow. There has been something wrong with ESRI's sample server for the last day so I have not finished a couple tiny spots. This was actually written to edit records in a related table. The user clicks on a point and if it has related data in the table the DataGrid is loaded. When a record in the Grid is selected the form is loaded so the record can be edited. There is an Add button to add a new record in the related table. I think it should be relatively straight forward to change to just edit the features not related records

I also attached a custom DraggableWindow that does a minimize to just the title bar. It has a lot of stuff in there that is there as part of the application framework I have developed, so it won't work as is but maybe give some ideas of how to go about it. I also added some gee-wiz animation to the close. There is also something you may find interesting in that it can flip from LeftToRight to RightToLeft dynammically

Personally for me, understanding how DataContext works took a bit, it does open up a lot more in Silverlight once it makes sense

2. So sweet of you to write this code on action completion. The thing is that if there is so much code for it, I don't see the advantage of using it instead of QueryTask. Can you see any advantage?

THe advantage and the nice thing about TriggerActions is it is a good way to separate business logic away from the UserControl code behind, really a design decision more than anything else

3. How do you know what is: Toda Raba?

Falls in the things we learned before we were 13 category I guess.;). I spent one summer in your home back during high school and hope to visit again soon because I am working in the region right now

What I do is create a control that inherits from the DraggableWindow in the Template project and use that to implement that behavior. I find it a lot cleaner than trying to put everything in the MainPage. I actually have a sample of a FeatureDataGrid and FeatureDataForm integrated into a DraggableWindow I can post an example later

Looking at this some more I realize that the Action would not have a DataContext because it is not a FrameworkElement. So you would need to set the DataContext on something like the Button and use that to set the property on the Action

So something like this in the XAML

In Silverlight the ah ha moment is when the data binding thing actually makes sense. The DataContext is pretty much a weakly typed object that any control can have attached to it. DataContext is inherited, so if I set the Context at the UserControl level everything shares that DataContext unless the control overrides it.

This Xaml

    <actions:SetLayerUrlAction Url="{Binding _ActiveLayer.URL}"/>

Is saying look at my DataContext (some object) for a (public) Property called _ActiveLayer and then attach to the Url property. But you have not defined this DataContext so it does not know what to look at. In the Button code it is saying the Map is DataContext and will look for a property on Map (which does not exist)

So the DataContext of the page needs to be set so the Binding knows what it should look for (I am not sure if setting on the button works or if it needs to be the page)


        public MainPage()
        {
            InitializeComponent();

            DataContext = this;
        }

in the class define your ActiveLayer object (public)


    public ActiveLayer ActiveLayer { get; set; }

Now the MainPage UserControl is bound to the class MainPage class and so

    <actions:SetLayerUrlAction Url="{Binding ActiveLayer.URL}"/>

Knows to look at the ActiveLayer property.

Likewise you could set the DataContext to the ActiveLayer object itself, and then your binding is just to the properties on the ActiveLayer. This would be a more common approach because you would normally bind to the object that is raising the PropertyChanged events

It's pretty hard to say without understanding how the DataContext is being set. but are you implementing the INotifyPropertyChanged in your _activeLayer object? This is required to notify the object bound in Xaml that something changed in the bound object.

As for the symbol, if you have a Url being bound you could also bind a Symbol.


   Symbol="{Binding _activeLayer.Symbol}"

When you set the Url you know the type of layer it is (point, line, polygon) and can set the appropriate symbol type at that time.

Yes, I guess: if the query returns nada well then.....? is a problem so I think I will withdraw (or progress, depends how you look at it) to the queryTask option. The SpatialQueryAction looks
tempting because it is very short but it is limited for what I need.
Anyway I attach the error message due to the binding: <actions:SetLayerUrlAction Url="{Binding _ActiveLayer.URL}"/>
(When I put ahard coded url it works fine).

Another question regards binding to symbol. The symbol is chaned from lineSymbol to MarkerSymbol to FillSymbol depends on the type of active layer (line, point or polygon).
How can I know which symbol to bind?
In all the samples, the layer is hard coded so i guess I muss this part.

I think you forgot to attach the error message :eek:

As for question 2, from what I can see (thanks to .net reflecter) all the Action does is populate the Graphics layer in the ExecuteComplete handler of the QueryTask. It does not seem to throw off any other notification. I think you are probably just as well off doing your own Query, you could even write it as a TriggerAction that fires an event on completion.

As strange as this sounds, in many ways I think they most complicated aspect to writing a large application with an ESRI Web Client API (flex also) is handling interactions of tools and buttons with features and the map. I have spent considerable amounts of time developing infrastructure that manages this interaction with notifications between tools so everything knows how the next mouse click should be handled.

In this case one quick and dirty way (as opposed to simple and elegant

) might be to add a CollectionChanged handler to your GraphicsLayer:Graphics collection. So when the points are added to the GraphicsLayer as a result of the query you will catch it and can flip the tool back on. Of course if the query returns nada well then.....?

1. I try to set the Url of the SpatialQueryAction by binding it to an object that I defined: _ActiveLayer.URL.

2. I have a toolbar where I keep always the selected tool. After using the SpatialQueryAction, I don't know how to restore the selected tool that was used before SpatialQueryAction. It always give me Pan functionality after using SpatialQueryAction. Is there a way to run a chunk of code after the operation is finished?
I can use the queryTask but I think it's less elegant than SpatialQueryAction.

Have you looked at the FeatureDataGrid sample http://resourcesbeta.arcgis.com/en/help/silverlight-api/samples/start.htm#FeatureDataGrid?

With the SpatialQueryAction you are passing in the LayerId of the graphics layer that you want the results to be displayed on. I think that if you bind a FeatureDataGrid to that Graphics layer it should display the results like you want (disclaimer: I have not tried this yet

)
