How to have application go to map extent of queried feature first

Question

I have a map url using the query parameter to go to a given selected feature (the value of the feature is passed from a script).  The application first draws the default map extent and then changes to the queried feature extent.  How do I have it skip the map's default extent and go straight to the selected feature:

My url:

https://*****.org/portal/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=##############&query=LAYER_5623%2Cfield%2Cvalue

Hi MaryBeth,

It might help if you could clarify, which app in Portal for ArcGIS are you using? Is it one of the configurable app templates? or a Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS app? Which release of Portal for ArcGIS are you using?
