Can you have different symbology in multiple layouts?

Question

One of the reasons that I want to use Pro is the option to have multiple layouts. I will often be asked to create the same map for several different provinces, and I like how I can have one map with several layouts.

However, this only works if I can set separate symbology for each layout view. Is there any way to do this?

Thanks for this question and solution it helped us figure out how to gain layer/symbology control between different map frames in the same project.  I plan to look into the scale-based symbology as well!

Robert Kossick‌ Connor Houston‌ is correct.  Maps in ArcGIS Pro layouts work just like Data Frames work in an ArcMap layout.  That is, the Map used in the Layout is a container that points to the map.  Any changes made in the Map such as layer visibility, symbology, projection, etc. will be reflected in the Layout.

Once you have your first map set up, from the Project pane expand Maps:

Right-click on your first Map > Copy.

Right-click on the Maps folder in the Project pane > Paste.  Do this as many times as you need.

In your Layout, you can now add each of the Maps.

Another way of getting to the same place is to just add Map 1 to the layout.  Copy the element and paste the copy onto the layout.  Use the Format Map Frame pane to quickly change the Map frame:

Symbolize your layers as needed in your maps.

Hi Robert,

In this situation I've added multiple maps to support the multiple layouts within a single ArcGIS Pro project.  Or if the scale changes between the multiple layouts, use scale ranges for symbol classes Scale-based symbol classes—ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS Desktop in one map.
