Does anyone have any good resources, tips, or tricks for designing better maps? Also, I am looking for a good set of road/highway marker shields.

I have found that Aileen Buckley's article in ArcUser (2012) is a great starting point. I refer undergrads to this source frequently. http://www.esri.com/news/arcuser/0112/files/design-principles.pdf
